Week 6 - Devotional 1 - Jesus Turns Water Into Wine - Inviting Jesus to the Main Event of Our Life

Monday (07/04/2014) - Read John 2:1, 2

Three days after Jesus chose his first disciples, he left the region of Jordan and returned to Galilee, where did he go? Who was there? Jesus was a social person. He didn't spend his whole time at the temple or synagogues. He spent time with people, having fun, observing, learning and teaching. How is your social life? You only walk with Christian people? Or just by yourself? What about the non-Christian people? It is when our non-Christian friends find themselves in need that we may have the right opportunity to witness to them about Jesus.

Jesus was invited for a wedding. Weddings are times for celebration. If you are married or dating, have you invited Jesus to be in your marriage/date? When you celebrate your victories do you remember of inviting Jesus to go along? Or do you only remember of call upon him at the trouble times?

Jesus's disciples were invited for the wedding too. Taking chronology in account, this is the first time the word "disciple" appears in relation to Jesus' ministry. What does mean to be a disciple?  Doesn't matter where you are, you still are a disciple of Jesus. It could be at your time of resting, entertainment, fun, etc., you still are a disciple of Jesus. How do you show you are a disciple of Jesus?

Conclusion of Week 5's Devotional

Despite many people use this prayer as a formula, repeating it daily (what is not wrong), it is more than that. It is a model for us to pray more effective prayers. Through this prayer Jesus was teaching that we should come before the God with adoration in our hearts, knowing that He is our Daddy and we have access to Him. We should seek to find what His will is so we can obey Him and help His Kingdom to be manifested here in Earth. Then we can bring our needs before Him, nor forgetting that He already forgave us and in the same way we should forgive those who offend us otherwise he won’t hear our prayers (Matthew 18:21-35), and not forgetting that many of our troubles are caused by our evil desires (lust) and our flesh who fights against the Spirit. We have to be aware that the devil is like a roaring lion going around us trying to devour us we should remember we can pray with all confidence because He has dominion over all things and He has all power to answer our prayers. May the Lord bless you!!!

Conclusão do Devocional da Semana 5

05/04/2014 – Sábado – Conclusão do Devocional

Week 5 – Devotional 5 - Jesus Teaches About Prayer – Being Delivered From Evil (Who Is in Control?)

04/04/2014 – Friday – Read Matthew 6:13

1 – To be delivered from evil is to not let evil have dominion over our lives. By evil we can understand two things: the devil or our evil nature (a disposition to do evil). As we already somehow covered the second one yesterday on the temptation/flesh matter, we will here refer to the devil-evil. And for us not to fall under his strength God already provided resources for us to resist and counterattack those powers trying to assault us. What are those resources?

 a)- the Name of Jesus – Psalm 20:7; 118:10-12; Acts 4:10; James 5:14-15; Acts 16:18; 2:22; Mark 9:39; Mark 16:17,18; John 15:16; Proverbs 18:10.

 b)- the Word of God – Matthew 4:1-11; John 17:17; John 8:31,32; Proverbs 30:5.

 c)- the Fear of the Lord – Psalm 111:10; Proverbs 16:6; 8:13; 14:26,27; 19:23.

 d)- Praise and Worship – Psalm 149:6-9; 2 Chronicles 20:12, 17-19, 21,22; Exodus 15:2; Acts 16:25,26

 e)- to Resist the devil - 1 Peter 5:8,9; James 4:7.

f)- the Armor of God – Ephesians 6:10-17 (truth, justice, repentance, faith, salvation, Word of God, prayer, praying in the Spirit).

2 – We pray to God because the Kingdom, the power and the glory belong to God-Father forever, i.e., He is in control of everything. Because of that we can be certain He is going to supply, He already forgave, and will able us to forgive, He will strength us against all temptation and protect us of all the attack from Hell. All power is His and all things are subject to Him. Amen (so be it).

Semana 5 – Devocional 5 - Jesus Ensina Sobre a Oração – Nos Livrando do Mal (Quem Está no Controle?)

04/04/2014 - Sexta-feira – Leia Mateus 6:13

 c)- o Temor do Senhor – Salmo 111:10; Provérbios 16:6; 8:13; 14:26,27; 19:23.

 d)- Louvor e Adoração – Salmo 149:6-9; 2 Crônicas 20:12, 17-19, 21,22; Êxodo 15:2; Atos 16:25,26

 e)- Resistir o diabo – 1 Pedro 5:8,9; Tiago 4:7.

Week 5 – Devotional 4 - Jesus Teaches About Prayer – Escaping Temptation

03/04/2014 – Thursday – Read Matthew 6:13

1 – Read James 1:13-15. According to this passage does God tempt anyone? Where does temptation start? What is the process started by temptation? So, all temptation starts in our flesh, through our lust (or evil desires). We know that the flesh has little to offer to us spiritually – it “profits nothing” (John 6:63), and it is very weak, very susceptible to sin. (Read Romans 6:19). But Jesus did come in flesh and live without sin (John 1:14), and we are told to clothe ourselves in Him and “make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts” (Romans 13:14). If we walk by the Spirit – being led and prompted by Him – we will be far less likely to “carry out the desire of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16).

2 – Read Galatians 5:13. As an antidote to serving our own flesh, what should we do?

3 – Read 1 Peter 4:1,2. For what purpose should we “arm” ourselves to counteract the force of flesh in our lives?

Semana 5 – Devocional 4 - Jesus Ensina Sobre a Oração – Fugindo das Tentações

03/04/2014 - Quinta-feira – Leia Mateus 6:13

1 – Leia Tiago 1:13-15.

Week 5 – Devotional 3 - Jesus Teaches About Prayer – A Provider and Forgiving God

02/04/2014 – Wednesday – Read Matthew 6:11,12

1 – The prayer’s first part was for us to worship God, recognize who He is, what He can do and what He wants to do. Now we will go for the petition part. God is a supplier and He supplies each and any one of our needs. But you can notice that the prayer is for receiving today the daily bread, and not for a huge amount as the Theology of Prosperity preaches. Indeed, prosperity means to have enough to live every day and not to accumulate goods or money. This picture of the daily bread comes from the manna God gave daily to His people on the desert. Read Exodus 16:3-31. Why the people had to gather daily only what was enough for the day? When we complain we don’t have something, we are complaining against whom? It’s in our attitude on the daily needs we can see if we are faithful to God.

2 – Though forgiveness God restores what is lost, He repairs what is broken and He re-establishes His life with us. Forgiveness is the foolproof plan God has implemented so that our relationship with Him remains in constant repair instead of in need of constant repair. Forgiveness is the miraculous working of God to save us from the consequences of our sin. It takes from the wrong place we have ended up in as a result of our sin to the right place to which God has invited us. The amazing message of the Gospel is that when we receive God’s forgiveness through the cross-borne sacrifice of His Son, we instantly have forgiveness for all our sins regardless of when they transpire in our life – past, present or future. Read Hebrews 8:12 and 1 John 1:9. What does God say He will remember about our sins? If we confess our sins, how much of our sins will He cleanse away?

3 – Forgiveness is a choice of how to behave toward and relate to someone who has offended you. It is not a choice of how to feel as a result of what was done. Forgiveness is not a feeling, nor is it necessarily tied to your feelings. It is a decision about what you want to happen to someone who has hurt you. Do you want them to pay a penalty – of the same magnitude as your ain – or do you release them from the consequences they justly deserve? Sometimes the best way to understand the meaning of a spiritual term is to see it used in a non-religious context, then transfer the word picture into our spiritual vocabulary. Take the word aphiemi, forgiveness (“leaving or discharging something, cutting it loose”). This same word (shown highlighted) is used in the following verses. Read the verses and try the exercise. Then explain in your own words what each verse tells you about what it means to forgive others’ sins. a) - “And they immediately left the nets and followed Him” (Mark 1:18). b) - ““But Jesus said, ‘Let her alone; why do you bother her? She has done a good deed to Me’” (Mark 14:6). c) - “And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she immediately arose and waited on them” (Luke 4:18). d) - “He who have died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings; and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, ‘Unbind him, and let him go’” (John 11:44). e) - “And a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, let her not send her husband away” (1 Corinthians 7:13).

Semana 5 – Devocional 3 - Jesus Ensina Sobre a Oração – Deus Provedor e Perdoador

02/04/2014 - Quarta-feira – Leia Mateus 6:11,12

Disse-lhes Jesus: “Tirem as faixas dele e deixem-no ir”.

Week 5 – Devotional 2 - Jesus Teaches About Prayer – His Sanctified Name, His Kingdom in Us, His Will

01/04/2014 - Tuesday – Read Matthew 6:9,10

1 – When Jesus says “Hallowed or Sanctified Be Thy Name”, He is not meaning to making Him holy, but acknowledging, and declaring Him to be holy, and a glorifying Him, and all His perfections. He is sanctified by Himself, by declaring Himself to be holy; by glorifying His perfections in His works; by implanting grace and holiness in the hearts of His people; by restoring the purity of His worship; by diffusing the knowledge of Himself in the world; and by taking vengeance on the wicked: and He is sanctified by others, when they fear Him, believe in Him, call upon His name, use it reverently, submit to His will, acknowledge His mercies, regard His commands and ordinances, and live a holy life.

2 – In which way can you “sanctify” God’s name today and during this week?

3 – The Messiah's kingdom had not yet come (Matthew 4:17), but was proclaimed by the Lord as at hand. It did speedily come (Luke 17:20,21) but in its fullness, and in its final triumph over evil, it has not yet come. For this coming we may now pray, and the prayer is answered in part by each success of the gospel. In this petition the disciples were taught to pray for the success of the Gospel, for the conversion of God's elect (in which the kingdom of God would greatly appear), to the destruction of the kingdom of Satan.

4 – What is God’s Will? His Will is basically two things. All the other things are an unfolding of these two things. The first is His glorification and adoration (Isaiah 43:7) and the second is the expansion of the Gospel (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15). The interesting part is if the Kingdom of God comes and advances ahead, then Jesus becomes the King in people’s lives, so this will result in more people worshiping God. This means that the very one will of God is His praise. Also, when we are evangelizing we are at the same time praising the Lord (declaring who He is). Finally for the will of God to be done our will has to be in one accord with His will. God wants the whole Earth to become just like heaven. For this to happen our lives on Earth have to reflect what happens up in Heaven, i.e., our total submission to God’s will. After seeing this, what is God’s will for your life? What is hindering you to accomplish it?

Semana 5 – Devocional 2 - Jesus Ensina Sobre a Oração – Seu Nome Santificado, Seu Reino Em Nós, Sua Vontade

01/04/2014 - Terça-feira – Leia Mateus 6:9,10

A primeira é  a Sua glorificação e adoração (Isaías 43:7) e a segunda é a expansão do Evangelho (Mateus 28:18-20; Marcos 16:15).

Week 5 – Devotional 1 - Jesus Teaches About Prayer – Our Father in Heaven

31/03/2014 - Monday – Read Matthew 6:9

1 – God has lots of names and titles. He is “I AM”, the Eternal One, the Almighty, God the Provider, Maker of heavens and earth, and many other names. But the intimacy and tenderness with which God loves us is wrapped up in one of His favorite names, the one His Spirit teaches us to say first, just after we are restored to relationship with Him. This name is Abba, which is Hebrew for “Daddy” (Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:6). God has a father’s heart. He is the perfect father who always knows what is best for us and who always does what is best for us. Unfortunately, many people end up with a distorted picture of God because their earthly fathers were unable to be everything God wanted them to be for their children.

2 – Even the best parents will say and do things that cause their children lingering grief. Our human failings and weaknesses make us vulnerable to hurting and disappointing the very people we most want to cherish. So it is that moms and dads sometimes choose poorly – and do lasting harm to their kids. Children whose earthly fathers did not have a positive, intimate relationship with them will carry a measure of mistrust and confusion toward God, their heavenly Father, even into their adult years. If you had a difficult upbringing and were unable to truly rest in the close presence of your father – for whatever reason – it may explain some of your awkwardness with the Lord.

3 – If our earthly father was distant or absent, our Daddy is always close and ever present (Deut. 4:7; 31:8; Psalm 46:1; 73:28; Jer. 23:23; Matt. 28:20; Heb. 10:22); if our earthly father was selfish or self-serving, Daddy is compassionate and sacrificial (Psalm 86:15; 103:4; Isa. 30:18; Dan. 9:9; Hos. 2:23; Matt. 9:36; John 3:16; Jam. 5:11); if our earthly father showed a conditional love, Daddy’s love is unconditional (Jer. 31:3; John 3:16; Rom. 8:38,39; 1 John 4:10); if our earthly father was angry and violent, Daddy is patient and encouraging (Neh. 9:17; Psalm 145:8; Joel 2:13; Jonah 4:2; 2 Pet. 3:9); if our earthly father was critical or fault finding, our Daddy is forgiving and gracious (Psalm 103:10; Isa. 43:25; Mic. 7:19; Heb. 8:12; 10:16,17); if our earthly father was abusive, our Daddy is restorative and redemptive (Psalm 69:16-20, 29-33; Isa. 40:31; 61:1-3,7; Jer. 30:17-18; Joel 2:25; Zech. 9:12); if our earthly father was controlling or authoritarian, our heavenly Daddy is loving and attentive (Deut. 7:7-9; 30:19; 2 Chron. 16:9; Isa. 49:13,15; Heb. 12:5-11).

4 – Which characteristics of earthly fathers i the list above best describes your earthly father?

5 – Through which of the characteristics of your heavenly Father has God revealed Himself to you?

6 – Which characteristics of your heavenly Father do you feel is the most important way that you need God to reveal Himself to you right now? Why?

Semana 5 – Devocional 1 - Jesus Ensina Sobre a Oração – Pai Nosso no Céu

31/03/2014 - Segunda-feira – Leia Mateus 6:9

7:7-9; 30:19; 2 Cron. 16:9; Isa. 49:13,15; Heb. 12:5-11).

29/03/2014 – Saturday – Conclusion of the Week 4 Devotional

This week we learnt that salvation is not by deeds, self-efforts or human knowledge. It happens through the action of the Holy Spirit when we believe in the sacrifice done for Jesus at the cross. This sacrifice was a reaction from God’s love for us, a love that is so big that nothing can separate us from it. It is only when we get near to the light and we are enlightened by it that we are exposed by what we are in God who is the source of all our actions. God Bless you!!!

Week 4 – Devotional 5 - Jesus Teaches About Salvation – Life Changing

28/03/2014 – Friday – Read John 7: 50,51; 19:39,40

1- Based on the above texts, do you think Nicodemus was born again? Why?

2- The mixture of myrrh and aloes brought by Nicodemus was for what? He had before come to meet Jesus by night, hidden. What about now? Why the change of attitude?

3- Take a time to remember the day you were born again? How did happen? Who did introduce you to Jesus? What did you feel when you heard the words of eternal life being shared with you? What changed in your life? The fire of the first love is still burning strong or is quenched? Remember you didn't deserve it, but God loved you and still loves you. He sent Jesus to die for you. Take a time to pray now so that the flame of your first love, a sense of gratitude and joy for the gift of salvation may come to be stirred in your life.

Quem lhe apresentou a Jesus?

Week 4 – Devotional 4 - Jesus Teaches About Salvation – God’s Love

27/03/2014 – Thursday – Read John 3:16-21

1- Why the Lord gave up his son? What did that mean? Have you ever worried that something has happened to separate you from God’s love? Have you ever felt far away from Him (especially after you have done something that you know is wrong)? Have you ever been so depressed or overwhelmed by the stuff of life that you forgot to even think about God? Our feelings often tell us it is impossible for God to still love us after all that has happened. The Bible tells us it is impossible for God to ever change His mind about us. Read Romans 8:35-39.

2- Why did God send His Son to the world? What is the destination of whoever believes in Jesus? And the end of those which don’t believe? The condemnation is done based in what?

3- Who is the light that came to the world? Why did men love darkness instead of light? How is described one who does evil? How is described one who lives by truth? What does mean “to live by the truth”?

Week 4 – Devotional 3 - Jesus Teaches About Salvation – Our Testimony

26/03/2014 – Wednesday – Read John 3:9-15

1- The testimony of Jesus was based on what? How was the acceptance of his testimony? Who did not accept it? What about your testimony? It is based on what? Is it in theoretical concepts or in life experience? Is it in human knowledge or in divine revelation? In the natural realm or in faith? What is the acceptance? Why?

2- Did Nicodemus understand what Jesus was saying? Why not? Can the natural mind, the wisdom of this world, comprehend the heavenly things? Why?

3- Who has gone into heaven? Who did come from heaven? Who is the Son of Man?

4- Why did Moses lift up the snake in the desert (Numbers 21:4-9)? What was the people’s sin? How were they healed? What was supposed to happen to the Son of Man? How can the world have eternal life?

Semana 4 – Devocional 3 - Jesus Ensina Sobre a Salvação – O Nosso Testemunho

A mente natural, a sabedoria deste mundo, consegue entender as coisas celestiais? Por que?

3- Quem subiu ao céu? E quem desceu do céu? Quem é o Filho do Homem?

Week 4 – Devotional 2 - Jesus Teaches About Salvation – Discerning the Spiritual Things

25/03/2014 - Tuesday – Read John 3:5-8

1- Who can enter the kingdom of God? What does mean to “be born of water” (Colossians 2:12)? What does mean to “be born of the Spirit” (Titus 3:4-7)? The Catholic Church uses this text to have the baptism as a way for salvation. After all, whoever is baptized will be saved (Mark 16:16) or one is baptized because he or she was saved? What was the requirement for the baptism of repentance, according to what we saw in “Jesus Is Baptized”?

2- In verse 6 Jesus contrasts two things. What are they? Can flesh understand the spiritual things (1 Corinthians 2:14; 15:50)? What does a natural man need to discern the spiritual things (Romans 8:9-11)?

3- How does Jesus describe the wind? Where does it come from? Where does it go to? Who controls it? How does this apply to one born of the Spirit? Can the world understand the reasons behind a Spirit led person? How does the world see the Church? Jesus said we can hear the wind’s sound, even though we don’t know where it begins or ends. The world doesn't know our beginning (in Christ) and our destination (salvation). What has the world heard from the Spirit born people or how has the world noticed the moving of the Holy Spirit in your life?

Semana 4 – Devocional 2 - Jesus Ensina Sobre a Salvação – Discernindo o Espiritual

25/03/2014 - Terça-feira – Leia João 3:5-8

1- Quem pode entrar no Reino de Deus? O que significa nascer da água (Colossenses 2:12)? O que significa nascer do Espírito (Tito 3:4-7)?

Quem o controla?

Week 4 – Devotional 1 - Jesus Teaches About Salvation – Spiritual Revelation x Rational Understanding

24/03/2014 - Monday – Read John 3:1-4; Ephesians 2:2, 3; Romans 8:15

1.  Who was Nicodemus? What was the common attitude of the Pharisees towards Jesus? When did Nicodemus go to speak to Jesus? Why do you think he chose this time to meet Jesus? How did he address Jesus? What does this title means?

2.    What did he say in relation to Jesus? How did he know Jesus had come from God? When people look at you do they know God is with you? How? Nicodemus only made reference to external signs (miraculous signs). What other signs can show that God is with us?

3.    What was Jesus answer? What does mean “to see the kingdom of God”? What are the requirements to enter the kingdom of God? What do you think it means “to be born again”? What does Ephesians 2 say about our past as children? How did our position change after the new birth (Romans 8:15)?

4.    What was Nicodemus answer to Jesus declaration? Jesus spoke a spiritual truth but Nicodemus understood it as a natural reality. What has been your answer or reaction to the spiritual revelations Jesus has given you? Have you used your rational thinking and wondering about your immediate needs (family, finances, health, work, career, intellect, etc) and consequences? Or have you used these truths to analyze and evaluate your character, attitudes, weaknesses, those areas that were not taken to the cross, those areas you still have in control? Why not take some time now to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to shine light into what is in darkness (things you are aware and unaware of) and those areas your Ego still has the control?

Notes:

1)- Rabbi – (Gr. rhabbi) – my great one, my honorable lord; a title used by Jews to address their teachers and masters (also to honor them when not addressing them).

Semana 4 – Devocional 1 - Jesus Ensina Sobre a Salvação – Revelações Espirituais x Entendimento Racional

Week 3 - Devotional's Conclusion - Theme of the Week: Jesus is Baptized

22/03/2014 – Saturday – Conclusion of the Devotional

This week we learned about baptism. We saw that John was preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, this being a public display of the changes that were going to take place in someone’s life. For this to happen it was necessary confession of sins, repentance, and forgiveness of sins for one to enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Again we saw that God fulfill his prophecies and that he supplied a Lamb to be sacrificed in our place, so we can be wholly forgiven. This Lamb of God was fully tuned to God’s will, keeping all the aspects of the Law, including baptism, thus receiving the word of affirmation by the Father and Holy Spirit.

We see in Jesus and John’s lives the aspects of humility and obedience by submitting to God’s will and recognizing their position in God’s plan. May we apply these same patterns of humbleness and obedience to our lives, with repentance (meaning a change of thinking) always ahead of us, so that we can be found in one accord with God’s plan for our lives. God Bless you!

Semana 3 - Conclusão do Devocional - Tema da Semana: Jesus é Batizado

22/03/2014 – Sábado – Conclusão do Devocional

Week 3 – Devotional 5 - Jesus is Baptized – Being Affirmed of Our Value

21/03/2014 – Friday – Read John 1:32-34; Luke 3:21,22; Matthew 3:16,17; Mark 1:10,11

1- What was the signal for John to know who the One that would baptize with Holy Spirit was? Did John see it? What did he start to testify after he saw the Messiah? Who do you think sent him to baptize with water? Was he obedient? What would have happened if he didn't obey? How is your obedience to God?

2- What was Jesus doing soon after the baptism, at the moment heaven was opened? What Jesus saw as soon as he went out of the water? Who else saw it?

3- “And a voice came from heaven...” Who did hear this voice? What did the voice from heaven say? Whom do you think spoke from heaven?

4- “You are my Son, whom I love...” Jesus was the Son of whom? John saw the Spirit come down and remain on Jesus and because of that he started to testify what? We can see God the Father and Holy Spirit confirming the baptism, identity and ministry of Jesus. Are you seeing a divine confirmation in your life at the different areas? If not, what can you do to change this?

Semana 3 – Devocional 5 - Jesus é Batizado – Sendo Afirmados do Nosso Valor

21/03/2014 - Sexta-feira – Leia Jo. 1:32-34; Lc. 3:21,22; Mt. 3:16,17; Mc. 1:10,11

Week 3 – Devotional 4 - Jesus is Baptized – Did Jesus Need to Be Baptized?

20/03/2014 – Thursday Read Matthew 3:13-15; Mark 1:9; Luke 3:21

1- Jesus went from Galilee to Jordan to be baptized by John the Baptist. Why did John refuse to baptize him? What did John want Jesus to do? You think he wanted to be baptized with what type of baptism?

2- How do you think John knew Jesus was the one that would baptize with Holy Spirit and fire (the Messiah)? Who gave him this revelation?

3- As we saw at the beginning of this week, the baptism of John was a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Did Jesus ever sin? Only someone with no sins could be the perfect replacement in our death and for the forgiveness of our sins. So why did Jesus go to seek John’s baptism?

4- John, besides being waiting to be baptized by Jesus, refused to baptized him because his baptism was one of repentance for forgiveness of sins. Once Jesus had no sins he had no need of being baptized. What was Jesus answer to this? What does it mean to fulfill all righteousness?

Notes:
1-  Righteousness in this text may indicate two things: A)- God’s will; B)- the Law. Jesus followed all the requirements of the Law, so that he could fulfill all the Law and not be found in fault (for example, circumcision). Jesus always obeyed the will of the Father.
2- Another reason for the baptism of Jesus could be for it to serve as a prophetic act. In the baptism the act of immersion into the water represents the death and the act of coming out of water represents the resurrection (Romans 6:3,4; Colossians 2:12). So by being baptized he was prophesying his future death and resurrection.

3- Jesus gives us the example as well, because later he and his disciples would be baptizing with water (John 4:1,2) and before he went to heaven he left commandments including the baptism (Matthew 28:18-20; Marc 16:15,16).

Semana 3 – Devocional 4 - Jesus é Batizado – Jesus Precisava Ser Batizado?

20/03/2014 - Quinta-feiraLeia Mateus 3:13-15; Marcos 1:9; Lucas 3:21

Wednesday, March 19, 2014

Week 3 – Devotional 3 - Jesus is Baptized – Baptism with the Holy Spirit and Baptism of Fire

19/03/2014 – Wednesday Read Matthew 3:10-12; Mark 1:7,8; Luke 3:15-18; John 1:26-28

1- “...but after me will come one...” John was referring to whom? John was baptizing with water. The one coming after him would baptize how? What does mean to be baptized with the Holy Spirit (see Acts 1:8; 2:1-4)? Have you been baptized with the Holy Spirit?

2- There is a contrast between the tree that produces good fruit and the one that does not produce good fruit, between the wheat and the chaff. What is going to happen to the tree that does not produce good fruit and to the chaff? What does represent the lack of fruit and the chaff in our lives? What does mean to be baptized with fire (see 1 Corinthians 3:12-15)? Are you been baptized with fire?

3- Luke 1:17 says that John would go in the spirit and power of Elijah, but here John declares that the One coming after him is more powerful than he is. What does that say to us about Jesus’ power? Power to do what? What does John’s statement show us about his attitude?

4- In Matthew 11:11 Jesus says that “among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist”, but here John the Baptist says he is not worthy to untie and carry Jesus’ sandals, task that was only done by the lowest of the servants in a house. What does that tell us about John’s attitude? What does that tell us about our own attitudes toward Jesus?

Week 3 – Devotional 2 - Jesus is Baptized – The Lamb of God

18/03/2014 - Tuesday Read Luke 1:17; Mark 1:2,3; John 1:29-31

1- What was the prophecy written by Isaiah? What is its relation to John the Baptist? What is its relation to the word given by the angel in Luke 1:17?

2- Whom did John the Baptist identify as the Lamb of God? How can the Lamb of God take away the sin of the world? Can you see that the sacrifice of the Lamb of God at the cross has freed you from all your sins?

3- Did John know the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world before? So how did he know Jesus was the Lamb of God? Why was John baptizing with water?

4- Finally, after reading the verses above, what was John’s role or responsibility towards Jesus?

Monday, March 17, 2014

Week 3 – Devotional 1 - Jesus is Baptized – Baptism of Repentance

17/03/2014 - Monday – Read Matthew 3:1,2,5-8; Mark 1: 4,5

1-    According to Matthew 3 what was John the Baptist’s message? What is the relation between repentance and the kingdom of heaven been near? Is it possible to enter into the kingdom of heaven without repenting first? Repent of what?

2-    According to Mark 1:4 John the Baptist was preaching a baptism of repentance. What does the word “repentance” means to you? Why was the baptism of repentance so important?

3-    From where did come all the people to be baptized by John the Baptist? What was necessary to do before been baptized? What do you think is the baptism? How is it done? Now that you know what repentance, sin, confession and forgiveness of sins are, do you think babies or little children can be baptized? Why?

4-    The Pharisees and Sadducees were members of religious parties in the time of Jesus. They were very zealous in observing the Law of Moses and other rites and traditions added to the Law, putting great weight over the common people in the way they should serve God as their interpretation of the Law was very legalistic. How were they criticized by John? Being so religious, why do you think they were coming to John to be baptized? Is it possible to be religious without repentance? What are the fruits in keeping with repentance? Have you shown in your life acts that express you underwent through the process of repentance, forgiveness and salvation?

Notas:
1)- Repentance – (Gr. metanoeo) – to think different, to reconsider, to change the way one thinks.

2)- Forgiveness – (Gr. aphesis) – To release from bondage or imprisonment; pardon of sins (letting them go as if they had never been committed); remission of the penalty.

3)- Baptism – (Gr. baptisma) – immersion, submersion; (of John’s baptism) that purification rite by which men on confessing their sins were bound to spiritual reformation, obtained the pardon of their past sins and became qualified for the benefits of the Messiah’s kingdom soon to be set up; (of Christian baptism) a rite of immersion in water as commanded by Christ, by which one after confessing his sins and professing his faith in Christ, having been born again by the Holy Spirit unto a new life, identifies publicly with the fellowship of Christ and the church.

Semana 3 – Devocional 1 - Jesus é Batizado – Batismo de Arrependimento

17/03/2014 - Segunda-feiraLeia Mateus 3:1,2,5-8; Marcos 1: 4,5

Week 2 – Devotional 5 – Jesus Lives - The Path to Salvation

14/03/2014 - Friday – Read John 20:18; Romans 10:9

# What Mary did do after talking to Jesus?
# What did she tell the disciples?
# What should we do to be saved?

Jesus commissioned Mary to go share the good news that Jesus was alive. Note what she says to the disciples: “I have seen the Lord!” We only can share what we are living. If Jesus is not real to us there is no way our testimony will have value or authority. Not only that, the text says “she told them that He [Jesus] had said these things to her. The message to be shared is based on what Jesus tells us. If we have no intimate relationship with Him, our message won’t be relevant to be announced and without a relevant message how will the people listen? They need to listen.

The only way for them to be saved is if we go to them with a message that has impacted our lives and can impact their lives as well. When we confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord over our lives and can also be over their lives then we are sharing what we believe in our hearts and that’s the only way people can be saved. Salvation comes through the personal and public confession that Jesus is Lord over our lives, after we have this as our personal statement of faith in our hearts.

It’s Easter! Every day is Easter. Jesus is alive! Let’s share the good news to everybody.  Read Romans 10:13-15.

Jesus Vive! Vamos compartilhar as boas novas a todos. Leia Romanos 10:13-15.
