Relevant Observations for Different Levels of Spiritual Maturity - 1 John 2:12-14

After explaining about the life of fellowship with the Father and with Jesus, and about the way to salvation and the fruit such way should show (love), the passage leads us to see who are the people this salvation is addressed to and how this develops in their lives as they grow in faith. The little children (babies in faith), the young men (those with some experience in the faith and an attitude of servant), and the fathers (those with more experience in the faith that, as pastors, leaders, advicers and elders, help other people to grow in faith).

According to verse 12 and 14, what happened to the little children (new believer)?
How are defined the young men (intermediate state of maturity) on verses 13 and 14?
How are described the fathers (spiritually matured) on verses 13 and 14?

Application:
1-When entering the Christian life through salvation, we have by faith to take over our new identity as children of God, and start our relationship of fellowship with God and His Son Jesus.
2-As we grow in fellowship and in our new identity we are strengthened against the devil's schemes (Eph. 6:11), we need to stand firm in Christ in the same way He is in us, taking possession of the authority He gives us to take hold of His victory at the cross over Satan as our own victory (Rev. 12:11)
3-In the maturing of our knowledge of Christ, in a practical way, developing fellowship with Him, we have to share this knowledge to others so that they can also reach out to this fellowship with Him.

Conclusion
Studying this first part of 1 John (1:1 to 2:14) we see that Christian life is a process when Jesus revealed himself so that we could have fellowship with Him, with the Father and with one another. For this to happen we have to walk in the light of a holy living according to the Word. When we sin we can feel safe knowing that Jesus who died in our place, delivering us from God's wrath and making us innocent, wants us to have a practical knowledge of Him and this can only come from a personal experience with Jesus that leads us to practice the commandment to love one another. Little by little we can find what is the level of spiritual maturity we are at.

Observações Relevantes Para Diferentes Níveis de Maturidade Espiritual - 1 João 2:12-14

Após esclarecer sobre a vida de comunhão com o Pai e com Jesus, e sobre o caminho da salvação e o fruto que tal vida deve demonstrar, que é o amor, o texto nos leva a ver quais são as pessoas a quem esta salvação é destinada e como isto se desenvolve na vida delas à medida que elas vão crescendo na fé. Os filhinhos (ou bebês na fé), os jovens (aqueles com mais experiência na fé e com uma atitude de servo), e os pais (aqueles com mais experiência na fé que, como pastores ou líderes, ajudam outros a também crescerem na fé).

De acordo com os versos 12 e 14 o que aconteceu com os filhinhos (novos convertidos)?
Como são definidos os jovens (estado intermediá rio de maturidade) nos versos 13 e 14?

Aplicação:
1-Ao entrar na vida cristã através da salvação, temos que assumir, pela fé, a nossa nova identidade como filhos de Deus, e dar início ao relacionamento de comunhão com Deus e seu filho Jesus.
2-Na medida que vamos crescendo na comunhão e em nossa nova identidade, vamos ficando fortalecidos contra as astutas ciladas do diabo (Ef. 6:11), tendo que permanecer em Cristo, do mesmo modo que Ele permanece em nós, e tomando posse da autoridade, que ele nos outorga, para assumirmos sua vitória na cruz sobre Satanás como sendo a nossa própria vitória (Ap. 12:11).
3-No amadurecimento do nosso conhecimento de Cristo, de modo prático, desenvolvendo a comunhão com Ele, temos que, então, infundir este conhecimento a outros para que estes também possam chegar à comunhão com Ele (papel de líder, conselheiro ou pastor).

Conclusão
Estudando esta primeira parte de 1 João (de 1:1 a 2:14) vemos que a vida cristã é um processo em que Jesus se revelou para que pudéssemos ter comunhão com ele, com Deus e uns com os outros. Para isto temos que andar na luz de um viver santo de acordo com a Palavra. Quando pecamos podemos estar seguro de que Jesus que morreu em nosso lugar, nos livrando da ira de Deus e nos tornando inocentes, quer que tenhamos um conhecimento prático dele que vem da experiência pessoal com Jesus e nos leva a praticar o mandamento do amar um ao outro. Aos poucos podemos ver em qual nível de maturidade espiritual estamos.

A New Old Commandment - 1 John 2:7-11

Christian life is a life composed of fellowship with the Father and the Son, and because of that we grow spiritually, perfecting God's love in our lives, so we can live as Jesus lived: reflecting a life of love towards our neighbor.

John talks about an old commandment. Which one? Read Leviticus 19:18.
But he also says it is a new commandment. How?
What does mean "darkness is passing away"?
What are the characteristics of someone who loves his brother, according to verse 10?
What are the characteristics of someone who hates his brother, according to verses 9 and 11?

Application:
1-To seek regeneration through the new birth, so we can try the new life in Jesus;
2-To live a life based on the Word, through the meditation and study of the Bible;
3-To live a practical gospel and not a theoretical one;
4-To possess an attitude of blessing giver instead of blessing seeker.

Um Novo Mandamento Antigo - 1 João 2:7-11

A vida cristã é uma vida composta de comunhão com o Pai e com o Filho, sendo que com isto nós crescemos espiritualmente, aperfeiçoando o amor de Deus nas nossas vidas, para poder viver como Jesus viveu, ou seja, refletindo uma vida de amor pelo próximo.

João fala de um mandamento antigo. Qual? Leia Levítico 19:18
Mas ele também fala que ele é novo. Como?
O que significa que as trevas estão se dissipando?
Quais as caracterí sticas de quem ama o seu irmão de acordo com o verso 10?

Aplicação:
1-Buscar regeneração através do novo nascimento, então poderá experimentar vida nova em Jesus
2-Possuir uma vida baseada na Palavra, através da meditação e estudo da Bíblia.
3-Viver um evangelho prático e não teórico.
4-Procurar ter uma atitude de abençoador em vez de buscador de bençãos.

The Process to Know Jesus - 1 John 2:1-6

The first chapter talks about John's desire for us to have fellowship with the Father and Jesus. As we saw in 1 Jo. 1:5-10, for us to have fellowship with the Father we have to walk in the light as He is in the light. In this passage we are going to see how to have fellowship with Jesus.

Why did John write these things?
What happen if we sin?
How does Christ deal with our sins? Only ours?
Propitiation means that Jesus appeased God's wrath against sin through His sacrifice at the cross turning us to be innocent.
Verse 4 talks about a kind of knowledge of God who doesn't leads to fellowship with God. Why?
According to verses 3,5,6 what do we need to know Jesus?

Application:
1-We'll know Jesus if we study the Word, fill ourselves with the Holy Spirit, practice the Word for our growth, and acquire knowledge that comes from a personal experience with God.

O Processo Para Conhecer a Jesus - 1 João 2:1-6

O primeiro capítulo nos fala do desejo de João que tenhamos comunhão com o Pai e com Jesus. Como vimos em 1 Jo. 1:5-10, para ter comunhão com o Pai nós temos que andar na luz como ele está na luz, confessar nossos pecados. Neste trecho aqui, nós vamos ver como ter comunhão com Jesus.

Por que João escreveu estas coisas?

Propiciação significa que Jesus apaziguou a ira de Deus contra o pecado através do sacrifício na cruz nos fazendo inocentes.

1-Vamos conhecer a Jesus se estudarmos a Palavra, nos enchermos do Espírito, praticarmos a palavra pra crescermos, e adquirirmos conhecimento que vem da experiência pessoal com Deus.

Walking in the light: the practice of truth - 1 John 1:5-10

John's goal was to testify about the Word of Life who was divine, became human, revealed himself so that we could have fellowship with Him, with the Father and with one another, then our joy would be complete. He came with a message and it's from it that our life of relationship with God is grounded.

What is the message given by Jesus to be announced?
In the message there is a strong contrast (two opposites). What's it?
What do you think about when you read about light and darkness?
What are the false affirmatives about fellowship with God(1 John 1:6,8,10)? What causes them?
What happens if we walk in the light?
If we sin, what do I have to do to deal with sin? What does God do when we confess our sins?

Application:
1-Living in darkness we can't have fellowship with God, so we have to confess our sins to become holy and innocent before God who is light, and keep on practicing the Word of God.

Andar na luz: a prática da verdade - 1 João 1:5-10

O objetivo de João era testificar do Verbo da Vida (Jesus) que era divino, se tornou humano, se revelou para que pudéssemos ter comunhão com ele, com o Pai, e uns com os outros, para que a nossa alegria fosse completa. Ele veio com uma mensagem e é dela que nossa vida de relacionamento com Deus se fundamenta.

Qual é a mensagem dada por Jesus para ser anunciada?

A Testimony That Generates Fellowship - 1 John 1:1-4

We can have a healthy relationship with the brothers and sister in Christ only when we keep a relationship of intimacy with the Father; and one of our life's goals should be to testify about this relationship, thus reaching the divine purpose of fellowship.

What can you learn about Jesus' divinity and humanity from verses 1 and 2?

1-Faith in Christ by who He is and not by what we think He is;

O Testemunho Que Gera Comunhão - 1 João 1:1-4

Quando mantemos um relacionamento de intimidade com o Pai é que poderemos ter relacionamentos sadios com os irmãos, e o testificar deste relacionamento deve ser um dos nossos objetivos de vida, para alcançar o propósito divino da comunhão.

Hungry Spirits, the Koram and a Chance to Peace

The Chinese celebrate on the 15th day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar the Day of the Hungry Spirits, while the 7th month of the lunar calendar is considered as the month of the hungry spirits. This year the hungry spirits day fell on August 24th. August is normally considered as the month of the hungry spirits (sometimes being extended to September) It’s believed that on the 15th day of the 7th month Heaven, Hell and the world of the living open and connect, thus causing the spirits and ghosts to leave the lower realm, including the dead ancestors to go through the world of the living. As a result, the people, mostly Buddhists and Taoists, execute rites to try to appease the spirits or relieve their suffering. The ancestor worship happens in full, with many people making offerings of food, burning incense, burning of joss paper, and burning papier-mache shaped objects as clothes, gold and other fine objects to appease the ancestors and avoid curses or problems in the family, work, health, etc. It’s a grotesque to see so much food and burnt things on the streets. A real work of witchcraft happening for the whole of the country, with the support and comprehension of the government, even considered as superstition but taken as part of the culture, religion or tradition of the people, after all, it’s better to cover all the bases, isn’t it? Unfortunately, nobody comments on the waste, the rats, cockroaches and other plagues that follow these practices. It’s sad to see so many people slaved by the prison of animism and evil spirits that are behind this celebration to get to be worshipped, due to fear. These practices, indeed, are ways to protect themselves from the evil they believe can attack them if they don’t do them, so that they can’t see that actually they are the ones feeding the evil they try to avoid. I don’t agree with their practices, but I respect their decision, continue to love, pray and serve them, when the opportunity allows me, so that I can show the including, reaching, protecting and saving reality of the Kingdom.

This week we were remembering those that lost their lives at the twin towers of the World Trade Center, on September 11th, due to a terrorist attack. This happened 9 years ago. On September 11th, this year, a friend posted a message at facebook, showing his sympathy to his American friends and to the American population in general, for what has happened and telling how he believes the world would never be the same again. It was a beautiful demonstration of love and empathy for those who suffered and still suffers by the Power of evil. But the comments he got in reply were a show of ignorance and lack of sensitivity. Some were making jokes because he posted 9/11 (as it’s read in English) instead of 11/9, (as it’s read in Brazil) as if this was more important than the meaning of the date. In one of the entries someone commented, not taking in account the pain the date brings, criticizing by saying that the only change in the world after 9/11 was the armed rise of a mourning nation invading other weaker nations due to selfish reasons. Truth be said, one thing do not justify another. Violence doesn’t justify more violence. But the reminder of the loss of human lives is not the proper place to make soulless political statements. It’s the moment to bring consolation and prayer and the proclamation of peace. This only shows what is inside humanity’s heart, even the Christians: a stuck, deep-rooted violence. What have we seen following the 9/11? A world anti-Islam feeling. Even among the Christians, men and women, there was a change in their perspective as they started to see all Muslims with suspicion, as the enemies and deserving to suffer the same violence they had caused, not considering that they didn’t caused (The movie “The Siege”, from 1998, becomes a prophetic moment). Hungry spirits dwelling people’s hearts.

The we have the Reverend Terry Jones, pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center, Who offers this amazing act of Grace and Love: to burn copies of the Koram in, what he describes, as “not an act of hate or love” in spite of him admitting “we will no longer be controlled and dominated by their fears and threats”, in what can be understood that from now on the threats come from him or the Americans Who are still suffering from what happened on 9/11. It’s a good demonstration of what doesn’t mean to be a Christian (at least no the biblical Christianity taught by Jesus). For sure all the Muslims got his point of view: an yey for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, value that they already live for. But what about the message of grace and peace and reconciliation that is the message of Jesus? Where is it? I don’t think they got to see that one. The hurt pride of pastor Jones was very clear, but the humility in extending forgiveness, this is still to be seen. Hungry spirits.

I was in Philippines at the beginning of this year in a evangelistic/social trip. From the many places where I’ve preached nowhere was I more touched than at Santa Cruz, a cemetery at the middle of the city of Manila, with around 300,000 people living on top of graves. I walked around there, looking at those people walking and living around the graves (some of the graves were piled up on top of others turning the cemetery in true corridors of death).We preached and distributed clothes there as people would receive Christ, but during the whole time I was there I kept reminding myself of the Gerasene Demon-possessed man. I always asked myself how someone could live in a cemetery. Only if one is infested with demons, isn’t it? But there I could see people who were living there for social, political, economic reasons. And in the same way as the demons inside the Gerasene man were hungry for his soul, and later hungry to go to the pigs, these people were hungry for a little of hope, social justice and a taste of the Kingdom of God in their lives “today”. But the hungry spirits have kept them bound to poverty, general indifference and rejection. Hungry spirits.

The answer to violence is no-violence. The answer is freedom. The answer is justice. The answer is peace. Matthew 5:3 says “blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:6 says “blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” The poor in spirit is the one who lost everything, even the vigor in his/her spirit is vanishing. These are those hungry for a manifestation of social justice. Theirs is the kingdom. Not a kingdom that will one day come, but a kingdom that is already here. We have the responsibility to proclaim this kingdom due to our role as peacemakers (Matthew 5:9) and because we are part of the Kingdom of the Prince of Peace who is not burning Korams, or allowing people to live in cemeteries, or disregarding someone else’s pain and suffering. On the contrary, it is a kingdom that leaves the insides of the church and helps to rebuild houses destroyed by tornados, earthquakes, landslides. It’s a kingdom who gives the opportunity for those who cannot support their families, who visits the sick and gives strength to those in despair. This is the true fasting (Isaiah 58). This is the role of the true Servant of God, guided by the Spirit of God (Isaiah 61). He/she rebuilds the ruins and restores the devastated places and the ruined cities (Isaiah 61:4). May we be hungry for the Holy Spirit (Isaiah 61; Joel 2:28) instead of allowing the hungry spirits in our souls to be expressed through acts of violence, prejudice, rejection, ethnic pride, denominational pride, religious pride, superiority and intolerance. Let’s give a chance to peace to be expressed through our lives.

Espíritos Famintos, o Alcorão e Uma Chance Para a Paz

No dia 15 do sétimo mês do calendário lunar os chineses comemoram o Dia dos Espíritos Famintos, e o sétimo mês é considerado como o mês dos espíritos famintos. Geralmente este dia cai em agosto. Neste ano o dia dos espíritos famintos caiu no dia 24 de agosto. Agosto normalmente é considerado como o mês dos espíritos famintos (algumas vezes se extendendo até setembro). No décimo quinto dia do sétimo mês acredita-se que o Céu, o Inferno e o mundo dos vivos se abrem e se conectam e, a partir de então, os espíritos e fantasmas saem do mundo inferior, incluindo os falecidos ancestrais para vagar no mundo dos vivos. Como resultado as pessoas, tanto budistas como taoístas, realizam rituais para tentar apaziguar os espíritos ou arrefecer o seu sofrimento. A adoração ancestral acontece com peso, com muitas pessoas fazendo oferendas de comida, queimando incenso, papel com aparência de notas de dinheiro e objetos esculpidos em papel machê para os seus ancestrais para apaziguá-los e evitarem alguma maldição ou problema na família, trabalho, saúde, etc. É uma cena grotesca ver o tanto de comida e coisas queimadas nas ruas. Um verdadeiro trabalho de macumba que acontece por todo o país com a compreensão e apoio do governo, sendo considerado superstição, mas que acaba encoberto como parte da cultura, religião ou tradição do povo. Afinal, apesar de ser superstição, é melhor cobrir todas as bases, não é mesmo? Mas ninguém comenta do desperdício, das baratas e ratos e outras pestes que seguem. É triste de ver tantas pessoas presas pelos grilhões do animismo, e dos espíritos demôniacos que realmente estão por trás desta celebração para receberem adoração, devido ao medo. Na verdade os rituais são formas de se protegerem do mal que crêem pode atacá-los se assim não fizerem e não enxergam que, na verdade, estão alimentando o próprio mal que pensam estarem desfazendo. Não concordando, ainda assim respeito a decisão deles,e continuo a amá-los e a orar por eles e, quando a oportunidade me permite, de servi-los para demonstrar a realidade abrangente, inclusiva, protetora e salvadora do Reino.

Esta semana nós nos lembramos daqueles que se perderam nas torres gêmeas do World Trade Center, no dia 11 de setembro, devido a um ataque terrorista. Isto aconteceu a 9 anos atrás. No dia 11 de setembro um amigo brasileiro postou uma homenagem no facebook, demonstrando o seu pesar aos seus amigos, e à população americana em geral, pelo acontecido e como o mundo nunca mais seria o mesmo. Foi uma bela demonstração de amor e empatia pelos que sofreram e ainda sofrem pelo poder do mal. Mas os comentários que ele recebeu em troca foram de uma ignorância e falta de sensibilidade total. Uns fazendo graça porque ele postou 9/11 (como se lê em inglês) quando no Brasil se lê 11/9, como se isto fosse mais importante do que o significado da data. Em uma das entradas, alguém comentou, desconsiderando a dor da data, querendo apenas criticar que as mudanças que ocorreram no mundo pós-11/9 foi o levante bélico de uma nação em luto invadindo outras mais fracas por motivos egoístas. Na verdade, uma coisa não justifica a outra. A violência não justifica mais violência. Mas a lembrança da dor da perda de vidas humanas não é o momento para comentários políticos sem alma. É o momento de trazer consolo e oração e a proclamação da paz. Isto mostra apenas o que está no coração do homem, e até dos cristãos: uma violência que esta agarrada, entranhada. O que vimos na sequência do 11/9? Um sentimento anti-islâmico mundial. Até entre os cristãos, homens e mulheres, houve uma mudança na sua perspectiva, quando eles passaram a ver todos os muçulmanos com suspeita, como inimigos e merecedores de sofrerem a mesma violência que causaram, apesar de não terem sido eles que a causaram (O filme Nova York Sitiada , de 1998, acaba por se tornar um momento profético). Espíritos famintos que habitam nos corações dos homens.

Também temos o Reverendo Terry Jones, pastor do Dove World Outreach Center, que oferece este incrível ato de graça e amor: queimar cópias do Alcorão que, como ele descreve, "não seria um ato nem de ódio, nem de amor" apesar dele admitir que a partir de agora "não viveremos mais debaixo de ameaças e medo", dando a entender que agora as ameaças partem dele ou dos americanos que ainda sofrem com o ocorrido em 11/9. Uma bela demonstração do que não significa ser cristão (pelo menos não o Cristianismo bíblico pregado por Jesus). Com certeza os muçulmanos do mundo todo conseguiram entender o ponto de vista dele: Olho por olho, dente por dente, valor pelo qual eles já vivem. Mas a mensagem de graça e paz e reconciliação que é a mensagem de Jesus, aonde está ela? Eu acho que esta eles não conseguiram enxergar. O orgulho ferido do pastor Jones ficou bem claro, mas a humildade em extender o perdão, esta ficou a desejar. Espíritos famintos.

No início deste ano eu estive nas Filipinas em uma viagem evangelística/social. Dos vários locais onde preguei nenhum me tocou mais do que Santa Cruz, um cemitério no meio da cidade de Manila onde moram ao redor de 3000 pessoas, vivendo em cima dos túmulos. Eu andava por ali e via aquelas pessoas caminhando por entre os túmulos, alguns empilhados alto e faziam verdadeiros corredores. Pregamos e distribuimos roupas ali e pessoas se converteram. Mas durante o tempo que eu estava ali eu frequentemente me lembrava do endemoniado gadareno. Eu sempre me perguntava como é que alguém poderia viver num cemitério? Só estando infestado por demônios. Mas ali estavam pessoas que moravam ali por razões sociais, econômicas e políticas. E da mesma maneira como os demônios do gadareno estavam famintos por sua alma, e depois para ir aos porcos, estas pessoas estavam famintas por um pouco de esperança, justiça social e um gostinho do Reino de Deus em suas vidas "hoje", mas os espíritos famintos as têm mantido presas à pobreza, ao descaso, à rejeição. Espíritos famintos.

A resposta à violência é a não violência. A resposta é liberdade. A resposta é justiça. A resposta é paz. Mateus 5:3 diz que "bem-aventurados os pobres em espírito, pois deles é o Reino dos céus." Mateus 5:6 diz que "bem-aventurados os que têm fome e sede de justiça, pois serão satifeitos." O pobre em espírito é aquele que perdeu tudo e até o vigor que existe em seu espírito está por se esvair. São aqueles que estão famintos por uma manifestação de justiça social. Deles é o Reino. Não um Reino que virá só no porvir, mas um Reino que já está presente e que cabe a nós o proclamarmos como pacificadores que somos (Mateus 5:9), uma vez que fazemos parte do Reino do Príncipe da Paz, que não está ameaçando queimar Alcorões, ou deixando pessoas morar em cemitérios, ou menosprezando a dor e o sofrimento alheio. Ao contrário, é um Reino que sai de dentro das 4 paredes da igreja, e ajuda a reconstruir as casas caídas por furacões, terremotos, deslizamentos. Que dá oportunidades para os que não tem como sustentar suas famílias, que visita os enfermos e encoraja os que estão desesperados. Este é o jejum verdadeiro (Isaías 58). Este é o papel do verdadeiro Servo de Deus, guiado pelo Espírito de Deus (Isaías 61). Ele reconstroi ruínas e restaura escombros e renova cidades arruinadas (Is. 61:4). Que possamos estar famintos do Espírito Santo (Is. 61; Joel 2:28) em vez de permitir que os espíritos famintos da nossa alma sejam expressos em atos de violência, discriminação, rejeição, orgulho racial, denominacional e religioso, espírito de superioridade e intolerância. Vamos dar uma chance para a paz ser expressa através de nossas vidas.

A Tour Bus, a Sewer’s Manhole Cover, Wounds and Unbelief

This last week everybody in Macau, Hong Kong and China got to follow the 12-hour hijacking of a tour-bus in Philippines when a former policeman kept 25 people from Hong Kong as hostages, releasing 9 of them later during the afternoon (children, old and sick people), but ending by murdering 10 of the remaining hostages. It seems now that all the killing was done by the hijacker. There were suspicions that the police force could have participated in the death of the tourists by the anti-professional and amateurish way they handled the case. The Hong Kong TV showed several live moments of the hijacking and following siege of the bus by the Police up to the blood conclusion, the murder of the hijacker and the rescue of the few hostages and dead bodies.

What seemed as a closed chapter of one more sad story is still having repercussions. This crisis has generated a very strong anti-Filipino mood in Macau and Hong Kong. It’s the critical eyes, evil comments, swearing and even in some radio broadcastings is possible to hear some radio hosts cursing the Filipino population as if the tragedy caused by an unbalanced man and a disorganized Police force was the fault of the whole Filipino population. In the following day one of the teenagers that come to our meetings here in Macau said that she went to a square with her young sister and while there one of the security men asked her if she was a Filipina. She said she was. After a while, she tried to buy something in the market at the square but the security man came to her and told her she was not allowed to buy anything there. In her words: embarrassing. And this is happening in an international community like Macau and Hong Kong. According to a friend, this will be going on for a couple of weeks, and until then the Filipinos will have to be patient and bear the pressure.

But this is a wound that will be painful for a while in the Chinese community. A family of 5 lost 3 people in this tragedy, remaining only the mother and the son who was shot in the head and is treated at the hospital in a critical situation. It’s hard not to empathize and cry together and we watch the weeping of the families. If you are like me, at the moment when these things are happening you should be praying asking for God’s intervention.

Last week a Brazilian missionary family was going to Hong Kong on vacation after a few years without taking a break. While they were walking the mother who was carrying her 6 month baby, passed in front of a construction site and suddenly, as she stepped on a sewer’s manhole cover, the cover under her broke down and she fell in a hole 2 meters deep. Her first reaction was to protect the baby, what she did well, but the fall caused her to break her leg in two places, around the knee area. The baby got some scratches on her face, but that’s was all. The construction company responsible for the construction site, including that manhole cover, went to the hospital to take a basket of fruits. Will this pay the hospital bill? This week we cut our vacation short to help the couple by taking care of their children. The mother is at the hospital still and, as her leg is all swollen, she doesn’t know when she will go under surgery or be discharged from the hospital. It’s a wound that will be painful for a while too.

I saw the circumstances in Pakistan as well. They are really suffering with the flooding there. No water, no food, and the international aid diminishing as nobody want to help a country that may be hosting or helping terrorists. I have prayed a lot for this people, and it’s impossible not to feel their pain and wish to be there to help someway. It’s hard to watch someone asking for water and receiving a stone of rejection or a snake of revenge in return. This is going to be a wound that will take longer time to be healed.

This week I want to talk about Shammah who got a wound that took a long time to be healed. What to do when we are hurt? How to work in the daily circumstances that leave a Mark in our souls?

2 Samuel 23:11,12

Shammah was the son of Agee. The name Agee means “I shall increase”. Agee must have had many plans and expectations. His goal was to succeed, no matter what. His name was a mission statement. But it seems that his plans failed, and all that he got to know was defeat, the frustration, the pain of putting effort and not see the expected results, the loss of all the investment as it vanishes just like water in dry land. Sometimes we have our own plans and we hope to succeed in our efforts, even to the point of taking God out of the picture. We think we can everything by ourselves, in our own strength and skills. For sure, we need to work in excellence, but God has to be part of the process. Otherwise the result will be frustration, depression, suffering, pain, loss. It seems that Shammah was born amidst this chaos and maybe that’s what was in Agee’s mind as he named his son.

The name Shammah means “loss”, “despair”, “astonishment”. Maybe this was the only thing Shammah learned and lived through his whole life. Imagine yourself growing and listening your name associated to pain, suffering, loss, depression. Imagine: “Hey, “loss” (or could be loser) come here”. “Depression”, where are you? “Hey, “pain”, I need you.” Can you imagine a child growing listening to these words?

But there came a day when He changed his story. There came a day when Shammah said “Enough!” Enough of all this pain! Enough of be known as loss and defeat and frustration. The Israeli army was in a lentil field, probably harvesting or protecting it. And there came the Philistines. What happened? The whole troop but Shammah fled from them. He must have remembered of the victories God gave His people, Israel. He must have thought of the victories conquered by David and the other might men who fought along him. He must have considered that God doesn’t change, but on the contrary it was He who needed to change his way of thinking and looking at himself and, more than anything else, his identity. Shammah stood his ground in the middle of the field. He defended it and struck down the enemy. The fields are ripe for the harvest today, but the enemy has tried to scare away the church so that they won’t go harvest the souls. We need, following the example of Shammah, take a stand and defend the field, even if it means that we will be alone.

What we learn here?

1- Our past may or may not direct our present and future. Our attitude will.
It’s not what happened to you that will direct your life, but what you do with that that has happened to you. What is your attitude when bad things happen? What’s your reaction? To fall in self-pity? Or in self complacency? To complain? To be passive? To feed bitterness? To lack in forgiveness? You can allow yourself to be influenced by the things of the past, or you can stand your ground and let God change your story. It’s easy to say that all the evil of the world is the Filipino people’s fault, or the Chinese people, or the North Korean, or the American people, or the Arab people, or the Muslim people. It’s so hard to see our own deficiencies in our attitudes of pride, bitterness, superiority and prejudice. Yes, people are kidnapped, people are killed, people doing good thing fall in sewer manholes, but this doesn’t mean that God is not in the control. And this doesn’t mean that God can change us and teach us in all circumstances. But it means that we will harvest the blessings if we dispose ourselves to go towards these blessings.

2- Many times we will be defending the truth by ourselves.
For many people truth is relative. It depends of the benefit it brings to them. Many people say that everyone has their own truth. Several times we will find ourselves defending the truths of the Bible alone by ourselves, totally abandoned may it be by fear, by the weight of the responsibility truth brings along, by the consequences, etc. Several times we will have people targeting our heads, ideas and positions with their weapons of criticism and verbal violence. But we have to root ourselves in the truth, because it’s the truth that set us free and brings healing to the wounds (John 8:32; 14:6; 8:36). Only the truth can give us a whole vision of life, because if the truth is relative, according to everyone’s vision, people who hijack buses and planes will be excused to do it, abortion will be justifiable, homosexualism will still be an viable option, drugs will keeping on have room among the young, domestic violence will go on being tolerated, pedophilia will find followers, because truth is limited to self-benefit, and ethic and moral will continue to be unrecognized.

3- The enemy doesn’t want us to benefit of the blessings of the Gospel.
We have to keep this in mind: God have already prepared unending blessings for us, but the enemy has been deceiving us trough lies, manipulation, oppression, deceit, giving us a mindset of conformism, passivity, of victims, saying that the situations we go through won’t change and God is unable to change those circumstances. If we won’t stand in the divine promises of the Word of God and spend time of fellowship and intimacy with God we will accept the enemy’s lies and we will become blind in our understanding of who we are in God and what is our destiny Just because o four unbelief that blocks the light of the Gospel of Christ to shine in our minds (2 Corinthians 4:4). We can’t accept to be called losers, frustrated, defeated, depressed, but we have to enjoy the blessings Christ bought for us at the cross.

4- God has called us to harvest the fields with the message of the Gospel.
John 4:35 says that the fields are ripe to the harvest. Jesus prayer was that God would send more workers to the fields, to harvest it. Mark 16:15 brings this reality where we are called to go to the field (world) taking the Gospel to all the living creatures. In Matthew 28:18-20 Jesus gives us the authority to make disciples (not believers or church members), teaching them the realities of the Kingdom (which is not limited to the church only), baptizing them to enter in this new reality and be assured of the cooperation, of the synergy with God who is always with us, after all we are His fellow-workers (1 Corinthians 3:9; 3 John 8). Do you know what is beautiful about that? It’s that many times when we are hurt, God will bring people who are hurt much more than we are so that we can become agents of healing to them, while He is healing us through this process without our noticing. When we serve we communicate healing and we are healed at the same time.

5- God has got a new name for us. A new identity.
Shammah suffered for a long time by being known as pain or loss or be reminded of the story of defeat suffered by his father and his family. But soon came a moment when he decided to be known by the name God had for him, assuming the new identity of the Kingdom. God has a new name and a new identity for each one of us. He changed Abram, Sarai, Jacob’s name to names that would express His purpose and His character. He wants to express His love, His character, His blessings and His plans in our lives. This new identity is found only in Jesus. For now to be a Filipino is not so good. In some countries to be Brazilian is not much of advantage. To be American is a death sentence in some Muslim countries. But we all can be citizens of Heaven, where nobody can prevent us of enter in but ourselves. Accept the new identity from Heaven to your life.

And in the end we read that the Lord again brought about a great victory. Shammah may have fought the battle, but God gave the victory. We may fight with all our strength but ultimately the victory will be brought about by the Lord. After all we are His fellow-workers and He is ours.

Um Ônibus de Turismo, Um Buraco de Esgoto, Feridas e Incredulidade

Está última semana todos aqui de Macau, Hong Kong e China acompanharam o seqüestro de um ônibus de turismo nas Filipinas que durou 12 horas, onde um ex-policial manteve 25 pessoas de Hong Kong como reféns, liberando 9 durante a tarde (entre crianças, idosos e doentes), mas que terminou com a morte de 10 pessoas. Agora aparecem indícios de que todas as mortes foram causadas pelo seqüestrador, apesar de anteriormente se suspeitar de que a polícia pudesse ter participado dos assassinatos pela maneira antiprofissional e até amadora como lidou com o caso. A televisão de Hong Kong mostrou vários momentos do seqüestro e cerco ao ônibus ao vivo, até a conclusão sangrenta com a morte do seqüestrador e o resgate dos poucos reféns sobreviventes e dos corpos dos mortos.

O que parecia mais um capítulo concluído de uma triste história ainda está tendo repercussões. Esta crise gerou um forte sentimento antifilipino em Macau e Hong Kong. São olhares críticos, comentários maldosos, são xingamentos, e até no rádio é possível ouvir comentaristas xingando a população filipina como se uma tragédia causada por um homem desequilibrado e uma polícia má organizada fosse culpa de toda a população. No outro dia, uma das adolescentes com quem trabalhamos aqui em Macau disse que foi a uma praça com sua irmã mais nova e enquanto ali um dos guardas lhe perguntou se ela era filipina. Ela respondeu que sim. Dali a pouco, quando ela quis comprar algo ali na feira da praça o guarda vem e diz para ela que ela não pode comprar nada ali. Constrangedor, nas palavras dela. Isto em uma comunidade internacional como Macau e Hong Kong. Segundo um amigo, isto deve durar ainda umas duas semanas, em que os filipinos vão ter que ser pacientes e agüentar a pressão.

Mas é uma ferida que vai doer por algum tempo na comunidade chinesa. De uma família de 5 pessoas sobraram apenas a mãe e o filho que está no hospital se tratando de um tiro na cabeça. Ao ver o choro das famílias não dá para não se comover e chorar junto. Se você é como eu, no momento em que estas coisas estavam acontecendo você já deveria estar orando pedindo a intervenção de Deus.

Semana passada, um casal de missionários brasileiros aqui de Macau estavam para ir a Hong Kong de férias após alguns anos sem tirar férias. Enquanto estavam a caminho, a esposa que carregava a sua filhinha de 6 meses no colo, resolveu sair do sol e andar debaixo de uma marquise, em frente a uma construção. De repente ao pisar sobre o tampo de esgoto, na calçada, este se parte e ela cai dentro de um buraco de 2 metros. Sua primeira reação é proteger o bebê, o que ela faz bem, mas na queda quebra o seu joelho em dois lugares. O bebê sai com uns poucos arranhões no rosto. A construtora, responsável pelo tampo do esgoto, foi até o hospital levar uma cesta de frutas para a família. Será que a cesta vai pagar a conta do hospital? Esta semana cortamos as nossas férias antes do prazo para ajudar este casal a cuidar de seus filhos. A mãe ainda está no hospital e, como a perna ainda está inchada, não se sabe quando ela vai fazer a cirurgia ou ter alta. Vai ser uma ferida que vai doer por algum tempo também.

Estava também vendo a situação do Paquistão. Como eles estão sofrendo com a enchente. Sem água, sem comida, e a ajuda internacional se esvaindo, uma vez que ninguém quer ajudar um país que talvez esteja ajudando ou dando abrigo para terroristas. Eu tenho orado muito por este povo, e não tem como não sentir a dor deles e desejar estar lá para ajudar de alguma forma. É difícil ver alguém pedindo água e vê-lo recebendo uma pedra de rejeição ou uma serpente de vingança. Vai ser uma ferida que vai demorar muito tempo para ser curada.

Esta semana eu quero falar sobre Samá que também tinha uma ferida que demorou a ser curada. O que fazer quando somos feridos? Como trabalhar as questões do dia-a-dia que deixam marcas em nossas vidas?

2 Sm. 23:11,12

Samá era o filho de Agé. O nome Agé significa “Eu crescerei”, “Eu prosperarei”. Agé devia ter muitos planos e expectativas. O seu alvo era ser bem-sucedido, não importava o que. O seu nome era uma declaração de missão. Mas parece que seus planos falharam, e que tudo o que ele conheceu foi o fracasso, a frustração, a dor de se esforçar sem ver os resultados, a perda de ver todo o seu investimento se esvair como água em terra seca. Algumas vezes nós temos os nossos próprios planos e esperamos ser bem sucedidos em nossos esforços, e acabamos até por tirar Deus de cena. Achamos que podemos fazer as coisas por nós mesmos, na nossa própria força e habilidades. Com certeza temos que trabalhar em excelência, mas Deus tem que fazer parte do processo. Se não o resultado será frustração, depressão, sofrimento, dor, perda. Parece que Samá nasceu em meio a este caos e talvez isto deve ser o que estava na mente de Agé quando ele foi dar o nome para seu filho.

A palavra Samá significa “perda”, “desespero”, “espanto”. Talvez esta tenha sido a única coisa que Samá aprendeu e vivenciou na sua vida toda. Imagine você crescer escutando o seu nome associado com dor, sofrimento, perda, depressão. Não deve ser fácil. A ferida era sempre relembrada quando chamavam o seu nome. Imagine: “Ei, “perda”, venha aqui”. “Depressão, onde você está?”, “Dor, estou precisando de você.” Você consegue imaginar uma criança crescendo ouvindo estas palavras?

Mas veio um dia quando ele mudou a sua história. Chegou um dia quando Samá disse “Chega!” Chega de dor, chega de ser conhecido pela perda e pela derrota e pela frustração. O exército de Israel estava em um campo de lentilhas maduras, provavelmente colhendo ou protegendo-o. E lá vêm os filisteus. O que aconteceu? A tropa toda fugiu deles, com exceção de Samá. Ele deve ter se lembrado das vitórias que Deus deu ao seu povo, Israel. Deve ter pensado nas vitórias conseguidas por Davi e outros dos valentes que lutavam com ele. Ele deve ter considerado que Deus não muda, mas que ele, Samá, precisava mudar a sua maneira de pensar e de se ver e, mais do que tudo, precisava mudar a sua identidade. Samá tomou posição no meio do campo. Ele defendeu-o e derrotou o inimigo. Hoje os campos estão maduros para a colheita também, mas o inimigo tem tentado assustar a igreja a não sair para a colheita de almas. Nós precisamos, seguindo o exemplo de Samá, nos posicionar e defender o campo, mesmo se isto signifique que ficaremos sozinhos.

O que aprendemos aqui?

1- O nosso passado pode ou não direcionar o nosso presente ou futuro, mas a nossa atitude, com certeza, irá.
Não é o que aconteceu com você que vai direcionar a sua vida, mas é o que você faz com o que aconteceu com você. Qual é a sua atitude quando coisas ruins acontecem? Qual é a sua reação? Autopiedade? Autocomplacência? Murmuração? Passividade? Amargura? Falta de perdão? Você pode deixar ser influenciado pelas coisas do passado, mas você pode também se posicionar e decidir deixar Deus mudar a sua história. É tão fácil por a culpa nos filipinos, ou nos chineses, ou nos norte-coreanos,ou nos americanos,ou nos árabes/muçulmanos pelos males do mundo. É tão difícil de enxergar as nossas próprias deficiências nas nossas atitudes orgulhosas, amargas e de superioridade e discriminação. Sim, ônibus são seqüestrados, pessoas são mortas, pessoas que fazem o bem caem em buracos, mas isto não significa que Deus não está no controle. E isto não significa que Deus não pode alterar e nos ensinar em todas as nossas situações. Mas significa que só colheremos as bênçãos se nos dispormos a irmos em direção a estas bênçãos.

2- Muitas vezes estaremos sozinhos defendendo a verdade.
Para muitos hoje a verdade é relativa. Vai depender do benefício que ela traz para mim. Muitos dizem hoje que cada um tem a sua própria verdade. Inúmeras vezes vamos nos encontrar defendendo as verdades da Bíblia sozinhos, estando completamente abandonados, quer seja por medo, pelo peso e responsabilidade que a verdade traz, pelas conseqüências, etc. Diversas vezes vamos ter pessoas mirando suas armas de crítica e violência verbal contra as nossas cabeças, idéias e posições. Mas temos que nos estabelecer na verdade, pois é a verdade que nos liberta e traz cura para as feridas (Jo. 8:32; 14:6; 8:36). Apenas a verdade pode nos dar uma visão integral da vida, pois se a verdade for relativa, de acordo com a visão de cada um, pessoas que seqüestram ônibus e aviões estarão sem desculpas para fazê-lo, o aborto continuará sendo justificável, o homossexualismo vai continuar a ser uma opção viável, drogas vão continuar a ter espaço no meio dos jovens, a violência doméstica vai continuar a ser tolerada, a pedofilia vai encontrar aderentes, pois a verdade está limitada ao benefício próprio, e a ética e a moral vão continuar a serem desconsideradas.

3- O inimigo não quer que nos beneficiemos das bênçãos do Evangelho.
Temos que ter isto em mente: Deus já preparou bênçãos sem fim para nós, mas o inimigo através de engano, mentiras, manipulação, opressão, tem estado a enganar as pessoas, lhes dando uma mentalidade de vítima, de conformismo, de passividade, de que as situações pelas quais vivem são imutáveis, que Deus é incapaz de mudar as circunstâncias. Se não nos posicionarmos nas promessas divinas da Palavra e se não gastarmos tempo de comunhão e intimidade com Deus nós iremos aceitar as mentiras do inimigo e nos tornaremos cegos no nosso entendimento de quem somos em Deus e qual é o destino por causa de nossa incredulidade que impede a luz do Evangelho de Cristo de brilhar em nossas mentes (2 Coríntios 4:4). Não podemos aceitar ser chamados de derotados, frustrados, perdedores, depressivos, mas temos que desfrutar das bençãos que Cristo comprou para nós na cruz.

4- Deus nos chamou para colher os campos com a mensagem do Evangelho.
João 4:35 diz que os campos estão prontos para a colheita. E a oração de Jesus é para que Deus mande obreiros para a sua seara, para fazer a colheita. Mc. 16:15 relata esta realidade nos chamando para irmos por todo o campo (mundo) levar o Evangelho a toda criatura. Em Mt. 28:18-20 somos outorgados de autoridade para fazer discípulos (não crentes ou membros de igreja), ensinando-os as realidades do Reino (que não está limitada apenas ao trabalho na igreja), batizando-os para entrarem nesta nova realidade e ter a certeza da cooperação, da sinergia com Deus que está sempre conosco, afinal somos cooperadores com Ele (1 Cor. 3:9; 3 Jo. 8). E você sabe o que é lindo nisto? É que muitas vezes quando estivermos feridos,Deus vai colocar pessoas mais feridas do que nós para podermos ser agentes de cura para elas, sem que percebamos que Ele está nos curando neste mesmo processo. Quando servimos transmitimos cura e somos curados.

5- Deus tem um novo nome para nós. Uma nova identidade.
Samá por muito tempo amargou ser conhecido como dor ou perda ou ser relembrado da história de derrota de seu pai e de sua família. Mas chegou um momento onde ele resolveu ser conhecido pelo nome que Deus tinha para ele, e assumir a nova identidade do Reino. Deus tem um novo nome e uma nova identidade para cada um de nós. Ele mudou o nome de Abrão, Sarai, Jacó para nomes que expressam o seu propósito e seu caráter. Ele quer expressar o seu amor, seu caráter, suas bençãos e seus planos em nossas vidas. Esta nova identidade é encontrada apenas em Jesus. Por enquanto ser filipino é ser mal-visto. Em alguns países, ser brasileiro não é muita vantagem. Ser americano é uma sentença de morte em alguns países muçulmanos. Mas todos podemos ser cidadãos dos céus, onde ninguém pode nos impedir de entrar a não ser nós mesmos. Assuma a nova identidade dos céus para a sua vida.

E ao final, nós lemos novamente que o Senhor concedeu uma grande vitória. Samá pode ter lutado a batalha, mas Deus concedeu a vitória. Podemos lutar com todas as nossas forças, mas a vitória vai vir do Senhor. Afinal ele é nosso cooperador e nós dele.

Atrasados na Maratona Bíblica, Mas Quase Lá / A Little Behind in the Bible Marathon, But Almost There

Finalmente conseguimos terminar o Velho Testamento. Terminamos na quinta-feira (26/08). Já começamos o Novo Testamento na sexta-feira, mas tivemos que dar uma pausa por vários motivos. Uma família de missionários brasileiros passou por uma experiência de acidente, em que a esposa, segurando o seu bebê de 6 meses, caiu em um buraco de 2 metros como bebê e quebrou o joelho. Ela está no hospital e estamos ajudando a cuidar das crianças (4 crianças). Também chegou um casal de missionários do Brasil e estão ficando conosco de passagem até pegarem o visto. Mas esperamos em breve concluir a leitura. Ore por nós. Também tem outras coisas que eu quero postar aqui, mas ainda não estou tendo o tempo para fazer. Orem por isto também.

Finally we got to end the Old Testament.We concluded it on Thursday (26/08). We already started the New Testament on Friday but had to give it a break due to some reasons. First of all, we are helping a missionary family who underwent an accident. The wife fell in a 2 meters deep hole with her baby on her arms and broke her knee. She is at the hospital and we are helping taking care of their children (4 children). Another Brazilian missionary couple just arrived from Brazil and are staying with us for a while, waiting until they have their visa to keep travelling to mainland. But soon we will be back to conclude the reading. Pray for this. There are some other things I want to post here too, but I can't find the time to write. Pray for this too.

Ainda firmes na Maratona Bíblica/ The Bible Marathon Still On

Continuamos no nosso propósito para estas férias de ler a Bíblia toda como um casal. Começamos no dia 10 de agosto e o plano é terminar no dia 28 de agosto. Já lemos Gênesis, Êxodo, Levítico, Números, Deuteronômio, Josué, Juízes, Jó, Neemias, Ester, Provérbios, Eclesiastes, Daniel, Oséias, Amós, Obadias, Zacarias, e o Livro 1 de Salmos (Salmo 1 a 42). Creio que vamos conseguir. Hoje estamos lendo 1 e 2 Samuel.

We are still going on our purpose for this summer vacations of reading the whole Bible as a couple. We started on August 10th and the plan is to end by August 28th. We have already read Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Neemiah, Esther, Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Daniel, Hosea, Amos, Obadiah, Zechariah and Psalms (Book 1: Ps. 1 to 42). I believe we gonna do it. Today we are reading 1 and 2 Samuel.

A Volley Match, a Day of Mourning and the Abandonment During a Battle

Last Saturday I went to watch the Brazilian women volley team play here in Macau against Netherlands. It was a very exciting match. Brazil won the first set, but Netherlands came back strong and got to win on the second set with very strong blocking. Brazil, then, got to win the third set, and it seemed that Netherlands were going to take the fourth one, again with their strong blocking, when Brazil team imposed itself and close the game in the fourth set. While I was watching the match I noticed both team’s coaches. While Netherlands’ coach remained seated and quiet during almost the whole game, only instructing his players during the breaks, the Brazilian coach screamed, directed, swore, got thrilled, and suffered together with his team, standing by the side of the volleyball court during the whole game. We could see the changes in the Netherlands’ team from um set to the other, but we could see clearly the changes in the Brazilian team during the development of every set. We received the tickets for free to go watch the games on Saturday and Sunday (on Friday we had a meeting at our place so we didn’t get go), and after watching Brazil playing against Netherlands I was expecting a great game for Sunday against China.

But on Sunday we learned that the game was cancelled because the government of China had decided to hold a National Day of Mourning on that Sunday in honor of those killed by the landslide and flooding in Zhouqu, in the Gansu Province, where more than 1239 were already confirmed dead, 505 were still missing and thousands were in shelters provided by the government. Because of that all the entertainment activities and events were cancelled. The government in Macau decided to follow China’s direction and cancelled all the events in Macau as well. National days of mourning like this are rare in China; it happened on April for the victims of the Yushu earthquake, and two years ago during three days for those killed by the earthquake that struck Sichuan. The government predicts that around 45000 people will have to be evacuated from their homes. The rain has been pouring down continually and is reaching even the province of Sichuan, the site of the massive earthquake of two years ago. Watching the tv we can see many images of soldiers half-buried in the mud, searching for survivors, boats rescuing people from their flooded houses, and digging machines. It’s sad to see the weeping of many survivors or those who lost relatives or the frustration when one more body is found from under the debris. All of this gives the feeling of incapacitation, limitation, pain, suffering, abandonment. Looking at them I started to wonder: What now? How are this people going to live their lives? What about all the hurts? Some of them were just left alone in the world. Others lost just everything they had. Where will they go from here? The circumstances and people may abandon and hurt us for several times, but how we are going to react to this is important.

Being forced to move back to Macau wasn’t in my plans, but circumstances in life forced me to this. It was hard. I felt hurt, even abandoned, but as time went by I started to see what God was doing. By taking time to meditate on the might warriors of David I came to know Eleazar and Shammah, who have experienced the reality of abandonment and rejection, but didn’t allow this to direct his life. Today I want to talk about Eleazar.

2 Samuel. 23:9,10

Eleazar was in a war. Whenever there is a war a soldier never goes to a battle by him/herself. There is an army that goes along. But what if the army run away and leaves you alone to fight against the enemy? It seems this is the case with Eleazar. Who is he? He is the son of Dodai . The name Dodai means “loving”, “caring”, that may express a character trait he may own. Eliezer, possibly, finds affirmation, love, encouragement from his dad. He learns that there are no limits or barriers for what you can get if you put effort and fight for it. He knows that even if he fails, when he comes back home he will be received by a family that loves and accepts him for who he is. From this he finds the assurance to challenge the Philistines.

Maybe this is the war when David fought against Goliath. If it is, this may explain the reason why Israel is so scared of the enemy. But not Eleazar. He is there, taunting the enemy, with no worries, when, suddenly, he looks back and notices that his whole army has just disappeared. His army ran away from the battle and left him alone in the battlefield. The whole enemy army is coming against him.

What would be the most rational thing to be done? Retreat as well, of course. But he has other ideas in his mind. He stands his ground and he fights the enemy all by himself and strike them down to the point of his hand grow tired and cling to his hand. Later the troops went back, not to help, but to strip the dead. Eleazar’s name means “God has helped”. No army, but God by his side.

What we learn here?
1- We need willingness to battle: We have to be pro-active.
Just like Brazil’s coach, we can’t wait for the time break to fix what is wrong. We have to be by the side of the volleyball court, giving the instructions that will perfect the moves during the running of the match and change the face of the game. We need to wish to be in the battlefield, and go to the battle instead of waiting for the battle to come to us. We have to understand that we are in a war and we will be influenced by it willingly or not.

2- We need to have a resolution of the spirit: Boldness.
We can’t run away from the circumstances that attack us. Just like the volleyball players we have to be prepared for what will come before us and answer it accordingly. Just like the soldiers that go to the debris searching for living and dead, not knowing what they are going to find, but hoping to find signs of life, victory and the feeling of a work well done, we can’t flee from the responsibility that confront us. We have to be bold to fight to the end.

3- Notwithstanding the weakness and weariness of the flesh: Weary but not quitting.
Yes, the battles that we are going to fight will drain our energy. It will drain our resources. And many times it will try to steal our hope. But we can’t allow weakness, limitations, the size of the task, etc., take the best over us. We have to persevere up to the end. Imagine the horror of the soldiers for every dead body they find; imagine the scene of desolation and destruction; think about the size of the task of searching for survivors throughout a whole city buried under mud; imagine to play everything that you can play and take the game to the fifth set (the Netherlands against Dominican Republic match went to the fifth set). We can’t stop. We have to GO ahead, otherwise the task won’t be concluded and we will reach only failure, defeat. No! We can’t give up.

4- Get hold of the Word of God.
So intense was the battle that the sword got to cling to Eleazer’s hand. The sword is a representation of the Word of God (Eph. 6:17) and we need to get it stuck to us. We need to breathe the Word. We need to live the Word. Just like the players practice and practice volleyball so that they can play better and better at the time of the match, just like they listen to their coach during the match to do the needed changes in their play, just like the soldiers need to practice and train for the day of battle or of the natural tragedy, in the same way we need to breath and live the Word of God up to the point that it may cling to us and our natural response may the truths of the Word.

5- We receive revelation and victory in first-hand; others come and get it second-hand (and mostly the revelation does not fit them).
Eleazar fought and won over the Philistines. The Israelites who fled from the battlefield only came back to take the spoils of a battle they didn’t fight. Today many people are like that. There are those who pray, study the Word, fast, research, spend time, hours, days, weeks, months to receive a revelation of God through His Word that fits to the realities and challenges they are facing. There are those that simply don’t do anything, and just take the revelations someone else received, and most of the time those revelations would not even fit to their lives. One thing is to support for Brazil, another one is to play the game. I can be proud of Brazil for their victory over China, Netherlands, Dominican Republic, but those who played the game know much better what took for them to get there. I can read about the tragedy in China, but those who are there, sinking in the mud, digging, etc., know better the joy and the adrenaline of finding survivors after hours of been under the debris.

6- God gives the victory.
In the end we read that the Lord brought about a great victory. Doesn’t matter how bold may be the tool Who fought the battle, the praise of victory, of the accomplishment, of the conquest, must be given to God. Eleazar fought the battle, but God was the One who brought about the victory. The girls of Brazil played, but it was the Confederação Brasileira de Voleibol (Brazilian Volleyball Confederation) who selected them to play, representing Brazil. The soldiers may find a survivor, but it was their government who trained them, selected them and sent them to represent their people and their nation. We, in the same way, are trained, chosen, called, sent to represent and serve our God. He is the One who gives the victory.

Oh, yeah, just to let you know: the Sunday match was transferred to Monday and the women volleyball team from Brazil played and won over China (3x0). We were there and it was a lot of fun!

Um Jogo de Vôlei, Um Dia de Luto e o Abandono na Batalha

Neste sábado passado eu fui assistir a seleção feminina de vôlei do Brasil jogar aqui em Macau contra a Holanda. Foi um jogo nervoso. O Brasil venceu o primeiro set, mas a Holanda veio com um bloqueio forte e acabou vencendo o segundo set. O Brasil conseguiu vencer o terceiro set, e parecia que a Holanda ia levar o quarto set, novamente com um bloqueio muito forte, quando o Brasil conseguiu se impôr e acabou fechando o jogo no quarto set. Enquanto eu observava a partida não podia deixar de reparar nos técnicos da seleção brasileira e holandesa. Enquanto o técnico da seleção holandesa permanecia sentado e calado por quase todo o jogo, só instruindo as suas jogadoras nos intervalos, o técnico da seleção gritava, direcionava, xingava, vibrava e sofria junto com o seu time, em pé, ao lado da quadra durante todo o jogo. Conseguia ver as mudanças no time da Holanda de um set para o outro, mas dava para ver a mudança no time do Brasil durante o desenvolvimento de cada set. Ganhamos os tickets para assistir os jogos de sábado e domingo (na sexta tivemos uma reunião aqui em casa e não pudemos ir), e após ver como o Brasil jogou contra a Holanda estava com uma grande expectativa para o jogo de domingo, que seria contra a China.

Mas no domingo ficamos sabendo que o jogo tinha sido cancelado, porque o governo da China havia decidido fazer daquele domingo um Dia Nacional de Luto pelos mortos do deslizamento e enchentes de Zhouqu, na província de Gansu, onde mais de 1239 já foram dados como mortos, 505 ainda estão desaparecidos e milhares estão em abrigos providenciados pelo governo. Com isto todas as atividades de entretenimento foram canceladas. O governo de Macau resolveu seguir a direção da China e cancelou os eventos em Macau também. Dias de luto nacional como estes são raros na China, aconteceu em Abril pelas vítimas do terremoto Yushu, e dois anos atrás por três dias pelos mortos do terremoto que atingiu Sichuan. O governo prediz que ao redor de 45000 pessoas vão ter que ser evacuadas de suas casas. As chuvas têm continuado e estão atingindo até mesmo Sichuan, a província onde aconteceu o destrutivo terremoto dois anos atrás. O que merece destaque é a maneira rápida como o governo respondeu a esta catástrofe, diferente do que alguns dizem da sua atuação no terremoto de Sichuan. Pela televisão dá para ver as várias imagens de soldados na lama, procurando por sobreviventes, os barcos pegando pessoas em suas casas, as escavadeiras. Também é triste de ver o choro dos sobreviventes ou daqueles que perderam familiares, ou a frustração ao encontrar mais um corpo no meio dos entulhos. Tudo isto dá uma sensação de incapacidade, limitação, dor, sofrimento, abandono. Olhando para eles eu comecei a me perguntar: E agora? Como estas pessoas vão viver as suas vidas? E as feridas? Alguns deles ficaram sozinhos no mundo, sem ninguém. Outros perderam tudo o que tinham. Pra onde eles vão a partir daqui? As circunstâncias e as pessoas muitas vezes podem acabar por nos abandonar e nos ferir, mas como vamos reagir a isto é importante. Para mim, ter que mudar para Macau não estava nos meus planos, mas as circunstâncias da vida acabaram me forçando a isto. Foi difícil. Me senti ferido, até abandonado. Estava muito triste, mas a medida que o tempo passava eu comecei a enxergar o que Deus estava fazendo.

Ao meditar nos valentes de Davi eu vim a conhecer Eleazar e Samá, que também experimentaram a realidade do abandono e da rejeição, mas eles não deixaram isto direcionar suas vida. Hoje eu quero falar sobre Eleazar.


2 Sm. 23:9,10

Eleazar está em uma guerra. Sempre que existe uma guerra um soldado nunca vai para a batalha sozinho. Existe um exército que vai junto. Mas, e se o exército foge e te deixa sozinho para lutar contra o inimigo? Parece que este é o caso de Eleazar. Quem é ele? Ele é o filho de Dodô, cujo nome significa "carinhoso", "amoroso", o que pode expressar traços de caráter que ele possuia. Possivelmente, de seu pai ele encontra afirmação, amor e encorajamento. Ele aprende que não existem limites ou barreiras para o que se pode conseguir se esforçando e lutando. Ele sabe que mesmo que fracasse, ao voltar para casa vai ser recebido por uma família que o ama e o aceita pelo que é. Disto ele encontra certeza para desafiar os filisteus.

Talvez esta seja a guerra em que Davi enfrentou Golias. Se é, isto possívelmente explique a razão de Israel estar com medo do inimigo. Mas não Eleazar. Ele está ali, provocando o inimigo, sem se preocupar, quando, subitamente, ao olhar para trás, ele percebe que o seu exército inteiro tinha simplesmente desaparecido. O seu exército havia fugido da batalha e o deixado sozinho no campo de batalha. O exército inteiro do inimigo está vindo contra ele.

Qual deveria ser a coisa mais racional a ser feita? Retroceder também, é claro. Mas ele tem outras idéias em mente. Ele se posiciona e luta contra o inimigo, sozinho, e os derrota ao ponto de sua mão ficar dormente e grudar na espada. Mais tarde as tropas voltaram, não para ajudar, mas para saquear os mortos.

O nome Eleazar significa "Deus ajudou”. Sem exército, mas com Deus ao seu lado.

O que aprendemos aqui?
1- Nós precisamos de ter vontade de lutar: Temos que ser pró-ativos.
Como o técnico do Brasil, não podemos esperar o intervalo para fazer os ajustes, temos que estar ao lado da quadra, dando as instruções que vão aperfeiçoar as jogadas durante o decorrer do jogo e mudar a cara do jogo. Precisamos querer estar no campo de batalha, e ir à batalha e não esperar que a batalha chegue até nós. Temos que entender que estamos em uma guerra e quer queiramos ou não vamos ser influenciados por ela.

2- Precisamos de ser resolutos em nosso espírito: Ousadia.
Não podemos fugir das circunstâncias que nos atacam. Assim como as jogadoras de vôlei, temos que nos preparar para o que vai vir pela frente e responde de acordo. Como os soldados que vão nos entulhos atrás de vivos ou mortos, sem saber o que encontrarão, mas com a esperança de encontrar sinais de vida, vitória e a sensação de um trabalho bem feito, não podemos fugir da responsabilidade que nos confronta. Temos que ser ousados para lutar até o fim.

3- Não aceitar a derrota pela fraqueza e cansaço da carne: Cansados, mas sem desistir.
Sim, as batalhas que vamos enfrentar vão sugar a nossa energia. Vão exaurir os nossos recursos. Vão muitas vezes querer roubar a nossa esperança. Mas não podemos deixar a fraqueza, limitações, o tamanho da tarefa, etc., tomar a melhor sobre nós. Temos que perseverar até o fim. Imagine o terror dos soldados para cada corpo morto que eles encontram; imagine a cena de desolamento e destruição; pense no tamanho da tarefa que é fazer uma busca em uma cidade inteira soterrada pela lama; imagine jogar tudo o que você consegue e levar a partida para o quinto set (o jogo da Holanda e República Dominicana foi para 5 sets). Não se pode parar. Tem que seguir em frente, senão a tarefa não é concluída, senão alcançamos apenas o fracasso, a derrota. Não! Não podemos desistir.

4- Se apoderar da Palavra de Deus.
Tão intensa era a batalha que a espada grudou na mão de Eleazar. A espada é uma representação da Palavra de Deus (Efésios 6:17) e nós precisamos que ele se apegue em nós. Precisamos respirar a Palavra. Precisamos viver a Palavra. Assim como as jogadoras praticam e praticam o vôlei para na hora do jogo poderem jogar o seu melhor, assim como elas ouvem as palavras do técnico durante o jogo para fazer as alterações necessárias nas suas jogadas, assim como os soldados praticam e treinam para o dia da batalha ou da catástrofe natural, deste mesmo modo nós precisamos treinar e respirar e viver a Palavra até que ela se apegue a nós e a nossa resposta natural seja as verdades da Palavra.

5- Nós recebemos revelação e vitória em primeira mão; outros vem e a recebem em segunda-mão (e, no geral, a revelação não se encaixa para a maioria).
Eleazar lutou e venceu os filisteus. Os israelitas que fugiram só voltaram para tomar posse dos despojos de uma batalha que eles não lutaram. Hoje muitos são assim. Existem aqueles que oram, estudam a Palavra, jejuam, pesquisam, gastam tempo, horas, dias, semanas, meses para receber uma revelação de Deus através da Palavra que se encaixa para as realidades e desafios que eles estão enfrentando. Existem aqueles que simplesmente não fazem nada, e tomam as revelações que alguém recebeu, e na maioria das vezes aquelas revelações nem sequer se encaixam na sua vida. Uma coisa é torcer pelo Brasil, outra muito diferente é jogar pelo Brasil. Eu posso me orgulhar do Brasil ter ganho da China, Holanda, Rep. Dominicana, mas quem jogou sabe o que precisou para chegar lá. Eu posso ler sobre a catástrofe da China, mas quem está lá, se afundando na lama, escavando, etc., é que sabe a alegria e a adrenalina de encontrar sobreviventes depois de horas de soterramento.

6- Deus dá a vitória.
Ao final lemos que o Senhor concedeu a vitória. Não importa quão corajoso seja o instrumento que lutou a batalha, o louvor da vitória, da realização, da conquista, deve ser dado a Deus. Eleazar lutou a batalha, mas foi Deus quem concedeu a vitória. As meninas do Brasil jogaram, mas foi a Confederação Brasileira de Voleibol que as selecionou para jogarem,representando o Brasil. O soldado pode encontrar o sobrevivente, mas foi o seu governo que o treinou, o selecionou e o enviou para representar e servir o seu povo e sua nação. Nós, da mesma forma, somos treinados, escolhidos, chamados, enviados, para representar e servir o nosso Deus. Ele é quem concede a vitória.

Ah, e só para você saber: o jogo de domingo foi transferido para segunda-feira e a seleção de vôlei feminina do Brasil jogou e venceu contra a China (3x0). A gente estava lá e foi muito divertido.

Apoio e Cobertura Espiritual: Obrigatório / Spiritual Covering and Support: Required

Eu estava pensando sobre os assistentes sociais que foram assassinados no Afeganistão durante esta semana, e sobre como estamos todos nós a um passo da eternidade. A princípio estava pensando sobre uma declaração política sobre o acontecido, uma vez que não podemos deixar de lado os aspectos políticos de um sistema que tenta usar da violência como o seu discurso de transformação (matando, inclusive, aqueles que ajudam o seu povo, no que se destaca como um puro ato de deslealdade) e se utilizam de mentiras para justificar matar alguém. Mais tarde pensei em uma declaração religiosa, ao questionar como um grupo médico pode ser identificado como o inimigo infiél descrito, de acordo com eles, no Alcorão (que, na verdade não diz isto), para chegarmos à conclusão que o Talibã só está interessado em seus próprios interesses e não no que diz a Bíblia ou o Alcorão. Com certeza eles não estão fazendo a vontade de Deus, apenas as suas próprias.
Mas cheguei à conclusão que não vale a pena pôr o meu foco no Talibã e outros grupos terroristas que não estão interessados em construir e respeitar a vida (não faziam isto quando estavam no poder, com certeza não o fazem agora), mas focar nos valorosos soldados da fé e em como suas vidas devem ser um exemplo para nós. Foi terrível o que aconteceu com eles, mas as suas vidas devem nos encorajar a seguir em frente e levar consolo ao abandonado, cansado, refugiado, doente, rejeitado, abusado, para que estes possam conhecer o alívio e o amor do nosso Salvador.
Caíram aqueles valorosos soldados, mas havia uma nuvem de testemunhas que os cercavam, observando e testemunhando do seu esforço, valor e integridade, enquanto eles seguiam o modelo deixado por Jesus em correr com perseverança a carreira proposta (Hebreus 12:1-3). Enquanto pensava sobre isto, me lembrei deste texto sobre Davi e seus soldados valorosos, e como podemos também experimentar outros tipos de quedas nada valorosas, se não cuidarmos da maneira como andamos e corremos nesta carreira proposta para nós. Eu o posto abaixo:

2 Samuel 21:15-17

Davi e seus homens vão à batalha contra os filisteus novamente. E após algum tempo Davi se cansa muito, afinal ele agora não é mais o pastorzinho de anos atrás quando lutou contra Golias, mas já é um rei envelhecido. E é bem neste momento que Isbi Benobe, um gigante, vem para atacá-lo. Você que achou que o único gigante com quem Davi lutou foi Golias? Bem, saiba agora que não.
E este gigante tinha uma espada nova que, crê-se, foi preparada especialmente para matar Davi. Ele iria inaugurá-la com a morte de Davi. O gigante só estava à espera do momento ideal, e ele o encontrou quando viu Davi cansado. Davi estava à sua mercê. Mas neste momento surge Abisai, que socorre a Davi, ferindo e matando o gigante filisteu.
Isbi Benobe, cujo nome significa “meu trono em Nobe" ou "meu trono no lugar alto” é a figura do diabo em sua rebelião, querendo nos destruir (Is. 14:12-15; Jo. 10:10). E Davi (o seu nome significa “o amado”) poderia ter sido morto, não estivesse ele coberto pelos seus valentes soldados, entre os quais destaca-se Abisai (“pai de um dom" ou "desejoso de um dom”).
Nós, a igreja, somos os amados do Senhor, e temos um inimigo que quer ver a nossa destruição. Ele tem uma espada nova, uma estratégia feita especialmente para nos destruir, e por isto nós não podemos, ou devemos, estar na batalha sozinhos. Devemos estar cercados de valorosos guerreiros que nos cubram e nos dêem apoio. Isto através de intercessores, mantenedores, conselheiros, líderes, estrategistas, irmãos que estejam conosco lado a lado no campo, etc. Ao final os homens de Davi não permitiram que Davi saísse a lutar na peleja novamente, a fim de que a lâmpada de Israel não se apagasse. Da mesma forma, nós somos luz para as nações, e se não cuidarmos poderemos ser derrotados pelo inimigo, e o pior resultado é que a nossa lâmpada para as nações se extinguirá. Temos que nos cercar de pessoas como Abisai, que tenham um dom para nos abençoar, aconselhar, interceder, discipular, pastorear, encorajar, ajudar a enxergar aquilo que nós mesmos não estamos enxergando, pessoas a quem possamos prestar contas e nos submeter, a fim de que a nossa luz brilhe com a maior intensidade.

I was thinking today about the social workers killed in Afghanistan during this week, and how we all are just at one step from eternity. In the beginning I was considering in making a political statement about what happened there, after all we can't put aside the political aspects of a system that uses violence as their language of transformation (killing even those helping their own people in what can be highlighted as an act of pure disloyalty) and making use of lies to justify killing someone. Later I thought of making a religious statement by questioning how a medical group can be considered as the infidel, the enemy as described in the Koram, according to them (even though it doesn't describe them like that) just to conclude that the Taliban is only interested in their own interests and not on what the Bible or the Koram says. For sure they are not doing the will of God, only their own.
But I got to the conclusion that putting my focus in the Taliban and other terrorist groups which are not interested in building and respecting life (they didn't do it when they were in power, and for sure they don't do it now) is not worthy of any value. Instead I decided to put my focus on the valiant soldiers of faith and how their lives should be an example for us. It was terrible what happened to them, but their lives should encourage us to follow ahead and bring consolation to the abandoned, weary, refugee, sick, rejected, abused, so that they may reach relief and get to know the love of our Savior.
Those valuable soldiers fell down, but there was a great cloud of witnesses surrounding, watching and witnessing their effort, value and integrity while they followed the model left by Jesus to run with perseverance the race marked out for us (Hebrews 12:1-3).
While I was thinking about that I was reminded of this text about David and his mighty warriors and how we can also experience other kinds of fall that are not quite glorious, if we don't watch the way we walk and run at the race marked out for us. I post it below:


2 Samuel 21:15-17

David and his men went to battle again against the Philistines. But after some time David feels tired, after all he no longer is the little shepherd that fought against Goliath, having become a king in his old days. It is at this moment that Ishbibenob, a giant, come to attack him. Have you thought that the only giant David fought against was Goliath? Well, now you know better.
This giant had gotten a new sword that, it’s believed, was specially forged to kill David. He wanted to inaugurate it through David's death. The giant was only waiting for the right moment, and he found it when he saw that David was tired. David was under his grip. But at this moment, there comes Abishai to David’s help, hurting and killing the Philistine giant.
The name “Ishbibenob” means “my throne on Nob” or “my throne on a high place”. He is the representation of satan in his rebellion, who wants to destroy us (Is. 14:12-15;Jo. 10:10). David (his name means “beloved”) could have been killed, wasn’t him covered/protected by his mighty soldiers, among which Abishai is highlighted. The name Abishai means “father of a gift” or “wishing for a gift”.
We, the church, are the Lord’s beloved and we have an enemy who wants to see our destruction. He has got a new made sword, a strategy planned specially to destroy us, and because of that we can’t, or shouldn’t, be in this battle alone. We must be surrounded by mighty warriors to protect us and give us support. This is done through intercessors, financial supporters, advisers, leaders, strategists, brothers and sisters that will be with us side by side in the field. In the end David’s soldiers didn’t allowed David to go out to fight again, so that the light of Israel may not be turn off. In the same way, we are the light to the nations, and if we do not take care we may be defeated by the enemy, and the worst result will be that our light to the nations will be extinguished. We have to surround ourselves with people like Abishai, who owns a gift to bless, advice, intercede, disciple, pastor, encourage, help us to see the things we are not seeing. They are people to whom we may be accountable and in submission, so that our light may shine brighter and brighter.

Este mês de agosto é o nosso mês de férias. Além de algumas atividades que estamos fazendo para tentar descansar e relaxar (além, é claro, de todo o planejamento para as atividades do segundo semestre), eu e Silvia resolvemos dar início a uma maratona bíblica. Queremos ler a Bíblia toda em 20 dias. Para isto separamos 2 horas na parte da manhã e duas horas na parte da noite para lermos a Bíblia juntos. Começamos ontem e já concluimos os livros de Gênesis e Eclesiastes. Hoje esperamos concluir Êxodo, e alguns outros livros menores. Estamos entusiasmados com este projeto em conjunto como casal. Algumas vezes é tão fácil fazer as coisas independente um do outro, ou nos isolarmos em nossas responsabilidades. Mas a verdade é: quando estamos unidos, este é o momento que nós nos encontramos mais perto de Deus.

This month of August is our vacation. Besides some activities that we are doing to try to relax and rest (not counting on all the planning for the activities for the next term), Silvia and I have decided to start a Bible Marathon. We want to read the whole Bible in 20 days. For this we have separated 2 hours by the morning and 2 hours by the night to read the Bible together. We started yesterday and have already concluded the books of Genesis and Ecclesiastes. Today we expect to end the book of Exodus and some other shorter books. We are excited in doing this project, as we are doing it together as a couple. Sometimes it is so easy to do things independent of each other, or to isolate ourselves in our responsibilities. But the truth is: when we are united (oneness), that's when we find ourselves closer to God.

Criados Para a Glória de Deus / Created for God's Glory

No domingo que passou nós comemoramos o Dia dos Pais indo a um restaurante indiano (no Brasil o Dia dos Pais é comemorado no segundo domigo de agosto). Silvia sempre teve resistência de ir até este restaurante, apesar de gostar da comida, devido aos inúmeros ídolos e imagens religiosas do local. Ela sente a opressão do lugar. Na verdade algumas daquelas imagens são realmente grotescas e querem possuir um senso de proteção, enquanto outras denotam algo da arte e cultura indiana. Fica a dúvida, qual é a linha divisora entre a cultura indiana e a religião indiana? Na verdade, é a falta de conhecimento de que fomos criados para a glória de Deus e a falta de relacionamento com Ele que nos leva a buscar outros deuses para preencher o vazio que existe no interior do homem. É a busca de propósito e significado que nos leva a propor outras figuras para ocupar o lugar que é de Deus por direito.

Isaías 43:4-7

1- Como somos considerados por Deus?
2- O que Ele fará então como rsultando de nos enxergar assim?
3- Por que não devemos temer?
4- Qual é a razão de sermos criados por Deus?

Continua aqui a carta de declaração de amor de Deus por nós. Nós somos dEle, porque Ele nos criou e pagou o preço por nós, e quando Ele olha para nós ele vê alguém que é precioso, que merece ser honrado. Deus no ama e porque Ele nos ama Ele dá tudo para suprir as nossas necessidades e nos resgatar completamente. Ele continua a afirmar para não temermos, pois a Sua presença está conosco. Você está com medo? Deus está com você agora mesmo, enquanto você lê estas linhas. E a sua vida é importante, porque é através dela que Deus é glorificado. Imagine? Você com todos os seus problemas, limitações, erros, etc., traz glória a Deus. Você não precisa fazer nada para ser amado e aceito por Deus. Aceite o amor dEle e declare o seu amor por Ele afirmando que você pertence a Ele. Você é dEle.

In this past Sunday we comemorated the Father's Day by going to an Indian restaurant (in Brazil, the Fathar's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of August). Silvia always had a resistence to go to this restaurant, even though she likes the food, due to the several religious idols and images in that place. She feels the oppression of that place. And indeed, some of those images are really grotesque, wishing to possess or give a sense of protection, while others denote something of the Indian art and culture. Remains the doubt: what is the dividing line between the Indian culture and the Indian religion? In the end, it's the lack of knowledge that we were created for God's glory and the lack of relationship with Him that lead us to seek other gods to fill the void existing in the inside of man. It's the search for purpose and meaning that lead to propose other images to occupy the place that belongs to God by right.

Isaiah 43:4-7

1- How are we considered by God?
2- What will God do as a result of see us like that?
3- Why we don’t have to fear?
4- What is the reason for God to create us?

The love letter of God to us continues here. We belong to Him because He created us and paid the price for us. When He look at us He sees something precious, worthy of honor. God loves us and because He loves us He gives everything to supply our needs and to rescue us fully. He keeps saying that we don’t have to be afraid because His presence is with us. Are you afraid? God is with you right now, while you are reading this lines. And your life is important, because it is through it that God is glorified. Imagine that? You, with all your limitations, problems, mistakes, etc., bring glory to God. You have to do nothing to be loved and accepted by God. Accept His love and declare your love for Him affirming that you belong to Him. You belong to Him.

Você é Meu / You Are Mine

A falta de identidade tem sido um problema muito sério entre os adolescentes, e é também entre os adolescentes da Ásia. Há algumas semanas atrás alguém pulou do alto de um prédio no condomínio onde eu moro. Os prédios deste condomínio têm 38 andares, portanto é uma queda mortal. Isto é um acontecimento frequente aqui em Macau e na Ásia (que possui uma das mais altas taxas de suicídio do mundo). O suicídio tem se tornado uma saída para os relacionamentos quebrados, falta de realização, ou rejeição por não alcançar determinados padrões ou notas. Quando eu converso com os adolecentes aqui em Macau, o que fica claro é a busca de um senso de identidade, de pertencer (à família ou grupo de amigos), de ser importante, de ter um propósito. A Palavra de Deus nos dá este senso de identidade. Peça a Espírito Santo para te orientar nesta leitura, leia o texto bíblico, tire um tempo para ler, avaliar e responder as perguntas e então leia o comentário que segue.

Isaías 43:1-3

Antes de ler o comentário abaixo, leia estas perguntas e pense a respeito:
1- Qual a relação entre o Senhor e Jacó e/ou Israel? Por quê?
2- Por que Israel não precisa temer?
3- Por que Israel é do Senhor?
4- O que acontecerá quando Israel passar pelas águas e pelo fogo? Por quê?
5- Qual foi o preço do resgate de Israel? Quem pagou este preço?

Você é meu!!! Esta é a declaração feita por Deus a Israel. Hoje nós somos a Israel espiritual de Deus e esta mesma declaração de aplica a nós tanto corporativamente como individualmente. Como eu posso afirmar isto? Pois assim como Israel foi criado e formado por Deus, foi remido e chamado pelo nome, assim também fomos nós. Quem te formou? Quem te criou?

Remir significa comprar algo que alguém perdeu por falta de ajuda, pobreza ou violência. O remidor normalmente era um parente que por estar em uma posição melhor compra aquilo que estava perdido em favor de seu parente menos favorecido. Quem te remiu? Quem te comprou, te libertando da morte, do pecado, das trevas? Quem te conhece pelo teu nome? Você é dEle!!!

Você pertence a Deus, primeiro porque Ele te criou e, segundo, porque Ele te comprou. E porque você pertence a Deus, pois Ele pagou o preço por você, você não precisa temer, pois Ele toma conta de você. O teu valor diante dos olhos de Deus é maior do que o valor das nações, ou das riquezas das nações. O resgate que Ele pagou por você foi o Filho dEle, Jesus, que derramou o Seu sangue na cruz para que você pudesse ser liberto do cativeiro (Colossences 2:13-15). Você, para Deus, vale mais do que nações, ou riquezas. Ele deu o seu próprio filho por você. Então não temas. Tudo está no controle dEle. Releia o texto de Isa. 43:1-3, mas agora substituindo os nomes Jacó e Israel pelo seu próprio nome. Leia como uma declaração de Deus para você, pois você é dEle.

The lack of identity has been one of the most serious problems among the teenagers, and it is also the reality among the teens in Asia. A few weeks ago someone jumped from the top of a building in the complex were I live. The buildings in this complex have 38 stores, so jumping from them makes it a deadly fall. This is a frequent event in Macau and in Asia (with the highest rate of suicide in the world). Suicide has become an exit for broken relationships, poor accomplishments, rejection due to the inability to acchieve the standards or grades expected for. When I talk to the teens here in Macau it becomes clear they are after a sense of identity, of belonging (to a family or a group of friends), to be important and have a purpose. The Word of God gives us this sense of identity. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in the reading, read the Bible text, take a time to read, evaluate and answer the questions and, then, read the commentary that follows.

Isaiah 43:1-3

Before reading the comentary below, read these questions and think about them:
1 -What’s the relation between the Lord and Jacob and/or Israel? Why?
2- Why Israel doesn’t have to fear?
3- Why Israel belongs to the Lord?
4- What will happen when Israel pass through the waters or fire? Why?
5- What was the price paid as a rescue for Israel? Who paid the price?

You are mine!!! This is a declaration done by God to Israel. Today we are the spiritual Israel of God and the same declaration applies to us both individually and as a body. How can I say that? Well, just as Israel was created and formed by God, redeemed and called by her name, so were we. Who formed you? Who created you?

To redeem means to buy something back that someone has lost for lack of help, poverty or violence. The redeemer usually was a relative in a better position to buy the lost thing in behalf of his less fortunate relative. Who redeemed you? Who bought you, delivering you from death, sin and darkness? Who knows you by your name? You are His!!!

You belong to God, first because He created you and, second, because He bought you. And because you belong to God you don’t have to fear for He has paid the price for you and takes care of you. Your value before God’s eyes is greater than the value of nations or the nation’s wealth. The ransom He paid for you was His Son, Jesus, who shed His blood on the cross so that you could be free from captivity(Colossians 2:13-15). Your value to God is far greater than the nations or their wealth. He gave His own son for you. So fear not. Everything is under His control. Read again Isaiah 43:1-3, but now read replacing the names Jacob and Israel for your own name. Read it as a love letter from God to you. You belong to Him.

Começos / Beginnings

Por muito tempo eu relutei em adotar as ferramentas tecnológicas que têm se desenvolvido dia-a-dia. Recursos como facebook, ou mesmo um blog, pareciam, e às vezes ainda parecem, ser de uma falta de privacidade e exposição muito grande. Mas a partir do momento que eu e minha esposa passamos a trabalhar com adolescentes, acabamos por perceber que precisamos adotar os mesmos mecanismos que eles adotam para se comunicar e se relacionar ou, de outra forma, não teríamos acesso a eles. E como não foi pequena a minha surpresa quando eu vi que outras pessoas e amigos já vinham adotando estes mesmos recursos.
Este blog vai ser um desafio, pois vai exigir disciplina para estar aqui diariamente ou regularmente; vai exigir esforço porque a idéia é que ele seja bilingue (português/inglês); vai exigir integridade porque o desejo é que seja uma forma de diário; e vai exigir espiritualidade porque o alvo é que atinja questões da alma e do espírito.
Espero que possam desfrutar destes posts e que seja uma fonte de encorajamento, visão e revelação para o viver diário. Espero ouvir de você nos comentários.

For much time I fought the urge to adopt the technological tools which are being developed day by day. Resources as facebook, and even blogs, seemed, and sometimes still seem, to be provided of a lack of privacy and an increasing exposure. But from the moment my wife and me started to work with teenagers we ended up realizing that we would need to adopt the same tools they use to communicate and relate, otherwise we wouldn't have access to them. And what was my surprise when I found out other people and friends already making use of those resources.
This blog is going to be a challenge to myself, because it will demand discipline to be here daily or regularly; it will demand effort once the idea is for it to be bilingual (English/Portuguese); it will demand integrity because my desire is for it to be a kind of journal; it will demand espirituality because the goal is for it to touch issues of the soul and spirit.
I hope you may enjoy these posts, and may it be a source of encouragement, vision and revelation for your daily living. I hope to hear back from you with your comments.
