Reality Through the Eyes of Other People

I have been reflecting a lot during these days about the reality of other people. I’ve read, watched, and heard several facts leading me to think: “What if it was me?” I just finished reading a post (Carta à minha aluna, Elisabete “Letter to my student, Elisabeth”) at the blog "Escrever é Transgredir" (“To Write is to Infringe”) (http://escreveretransgredir.blogspot.com/) that led me to think deeply about this. How many times are we blind to the reality and perspectives of other people? How many time do we think that our reality and perspectives are the only right ones?

I am reading a book by Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinov, The Grand Design, that deals with Quantum Physics, a new theory on alternative histories (all the possible alternatives that could have happened, in Quantum Physics they actually happen, happened and will happen) and some other theories. But one aspect the authors bring very clear is the fact of reality maybe not be the reality. They say that I may be looking at a Picture, a moment, a circumstance and interpret it in a different way from someone else that is looking at the same Picture, moment and circumstances. See that I am not talking about the truth, as many people considered it to be relative nowadays (what is not totally wrong because in certain aspects it can be), but without considering that exist a Truth that is absolute and nothing can change her or touch her. Even when one says the truth is relative he/she is turning this statement into an absolute truth, because they would never give up this remark.

Yesterday night I was watching the news and saw a story of an Indian girl who was deceived to go to Hong Kong under the promise of marriage, but as she got there she became a Bride-slave of the “supposed” groom to be. The “groom” works at the government and brought her to Hong Kong under a work visa, in spite of declaring her to be his wife, in spite of never marrying her, in spite of having received the dowry from her family in India and promising to marry her. She was beaten, raped, locked inside his apartment... until she found a way to escape and go to the Police to file a complaint of kidnapping and abuse. The police answer? No proof enough to investigate the case. Only after some human rights organizations came to the picture is that answers started to show up. What if it was me, my son, or my sister?

This week the president of Brazil has officially recognized the Palestine Authority and its territory, joining 100 other nations that have done so. This led to a criticism made for the State of Israel, and for sure, many other Christians. I love Israel, I have Jewish relatives, I am a Christian who loves the Bible and want to see the prophecies been fulfilled. In spite of these, I though the president did well. Why? It’s our duty to defend the peace and the right to life for all. This includes the Palestinians. The Psalm 122:6 says that we should pray for the Peace of Jerusalem, not that we should force the fulfilling of the prophecies. We should pray and prophecy and seek the peace. God will cause the Scriptures to be fulfilled doesn’t matter if we are in favor or against them. What if it was me? Or what if it was in Brazil or your home country? What if they said you have no rights to citizenship, place for living, locomotion, education, etc? I will continue to pray for the peace of Israel and to defend this peace, but I will continue to pray for the peace of the Palestinians too, and for the peace of the Afghans, Iraqis, Americans, Pakistanis, Koreans, etc. Many times our prayers will have to be followed by practical decisions. Many times I will be the answer to my own prayers. So? How is going to be?

Two weeks ago I heard Pr. Silas Zdrojewski, from the Primeira Igreja do Evangelho Quadrangular de Curitiba (First Foursquare Gospel Church of Curitiba) (http://www.primeiraieq.com.br/), declaring the following statement about something that is missing in many Christians: “Our life need to be coherent to our prayers... The prayer must be an expression of our hearts... The prayer will have more authority by asking for the Kingdom (of God) and living according to the laws of this Kingdom”. How many times we pray selfish prayers according to our selfish perspectives of the reality? How many times we put ourselves inside the lives of other people before we take our decisions?

May we take off the glasses limiting us to our selfish vision of the world, and begin to use lens that may open our eyes to the reality of our neighbors so that we can give a fitting answer to the needs around us and pray the right prayers to the circumstances presenting themselves. Many people want to be prophets and kings; few are those willing to take the towel and the basin to wash others’ feet. May we too seek to have a servant’s eyes.

Devemos orar e profetizar e buscar a paz.

Duas semanas atrás eu ouvi do Pr.

"Too Busy"

I received this in my e-mail. So true!

Satan called a worldwide convention of demons.

In his opening address he said, "We can't keep Christians from going to church.""We can't keep them from reading their Bibles and knowing the truth...."

"We can't even keep them from forming an intimate relationship with Their SAVIOR."

"Once they gain that connection with JESUS, our power over them is Broken."

"So let them go to their churches; let them have their covered dish dinners, BUT steal their time, so they don't have time to develop arelationship With JESUS CHRIST.."

"This is what I want you to do," said the devil:"Distract them from gaining hold of their SAVIOR and maintaining that Vital connection throughout their day!"

"How shall we do this?" his demons shouted.

"Keep them busy in the non-essentials of life and invent innumerable Schemes to occupy their minds," he answered....

"Tempt them to spend, spend, spend, and borrow, borrow, borrow."

"Persuade the wives to go to work for long hours and the husbands to work 6-7 days each week, 10-12 hours a day, so they can afford their empty Lifestyles."

"Keep them from spending time with their children."
"As their families fragment, soon, their homes will offer no escape from The pressures of work!"

"Over-stimulate their minds so that they cannot hear that still, small voice.""Entice them to play the radio or I-Pod whenever they drive." To Keep the TV, DVDs, CDs and their PCs going constantly in their home and see To it that every store and restaurant in the world plays non-biblical musicConstantly."

"Let them play Lil Farm, Farmville and other Facebook games in their computer the whole day so that their time got consumed in that activity alone"

"This will jam their minds and break that union with CHRIST."

"Fill the coffee tables with magazines and newspapers."

"Pound their minds with the news 24 hours a day."

"Invade their driving moments with billboards."

"Flood their mailboxes with junk mail, mail order catalogs, sweepstakes, and Every kind of newsletter and promotional offering free products, services And false hopes."

"Keep skinny, beautiful models on the magazines and TV so their husbands Will believe that outward beauty is what's important, and they'll Become dissatisfied with their wives. "

"Keep the wives too tired to love their husbands at night." "Give them headaches too! ""If they don't give their husbands the love they need, they will begin to Look elsewhere.""That will fragment their families quickly!"

"Give them Santa Claus to distract them from teaching their children the Real meaning of Christmas.."

"Give them an Easter bunny so they won't talk about HIS resurrection And power over sin and death..."

"Even in their recreation, let them be excessive.""Have them return from their recreation exhausted."

"Keep them too busy to go out in nature and reflect on GOD'S creation. Send them to amusement parks, sporting events, plays, concerts, and movies Instead."

"Keep them busy, busy, busy!"

"And when they meet for spiritual fellowship, involve them in gossip and Small talk so that they leave with troubled consciences. "

"Crowd their lives with so many good causes they have no time to seek Power from JESUS."

"Soon they will be working in their own strength, sacrificing their health And family for the good of the cause."

"It will work!" "It will work!" It was quite a plan!

The demons went eagerly to their assignments causing Christians everywhere To get busier & more rushed, going here & there.

Having little time for their GOD or their families.Having no time to tell others about the power of JESUS to change lives.

I guess the question is, has the devil been successful in his schemes? You be the judge!!!!!

Does "BUSY" mean: B-eing U-nder S-atan's Y-oke?Please pass this on, if you aren't too BUSY!

The Effects of Unity (Part 4 of 5)

III. The Multiplying Effect (verse 3a): “It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion.”

Unity is divine. It doesn’t originates from men (even though we should seek its life in our midst), but it has its origin in God. The dew comes from high above to down below. It comes from the sky towards the ground. Unity, in the same way, comes from God towards our lives and the Church.

The region of the Hermon is a fertile region and rich in vegetation. The specialists say that in deed there is a layer of dew that comes down from the Hermon mount, taken by the wind that waters the region around. It is clear that the description of dew reaching the Mount Zion (Jerusalem) is a hyperboles, an exaggeration, because Jerusalem is far from the Hermon a long distance, but the author’s reason here is to describe the point of prosperity and fertility (Genesis 27:28; Zechariah 8:12). And such is the power of this symbol that the devil tries to pervert it to become part of the cult of worship to Baal who was believed to be responsible for all the fertility and prosperity in the land. That’s was God’s reason, in the time of Elijah, to start a drought that remained three years and a half so that, through the prophesying of Elijah, to expose the false god of fertility.

What this represents for us today, as Church, is that beside all the fertility and material prosperity aspects (in all areas) liberated by unity, as we can see in the beginning of the church when they would share their possessions and nobody among them would suffer need (Acts 4:34,35), God, through unity, causes many conversions and multitudes to get closer to Himself (Acts 2:44-47). This gives start to a true ecclesiastic growth movement in amount of people, highlighted by the number of people in the vigor of their strength, desiring to present themselves before God in a voluntary way, dressed in clothes of worship, at the moment of the first glimpse of light (availability) (Psalm 110:3).

Os Efeitos da Unidade (Parte 4 de 5)

III.

A unidade é divina.

The Effects of Unity (Part 3 of 5)

II. The Sanctifying Effect (verse 2): “It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron's beard, down upon the collar of his robes.”

The aspect we want to highlight here is that unity is holy and causes the church to become holy. The analogy used in this verse refers to the sacred anointing oil. This oil was made according to the prescriptions given by God to consecrate the Tabernacle and its utensils as well as the priests. Apart from these things and people, no one else could make personal use of the oil. The result was that everything the oil touched would become holy (Exodus 30:23-33). So, when unity comes over the church, it touches the church, everything the church possesses, as well as its leaders and people and sanctify them.

The unity brings a separation (sanctification) to minister (to serve) or for the ministry (service). There is no ministry apart from the church. The ministration done by “brothers” with no bond to a church has no anointing. It is not sanctified. Aaron only got to start ministering as High Priest, and his sons as priests, when they were anointed with the anointing oil (Leviticus 8). There is no “Lone Ranger” in the Kingdom of God, there is only a holy “army”, led by sanctified, consecrated, anointed leaders who live and enjoy an environment of unity.

And the sanctifying effect has a diffusive (propagating) action. The oil runs down from the head, spreading to the rest of the body. What we get from this is that unity causes the anointing to be propagated. It’s from a few to the whole. It’s from the leader to the followers (here reaching a personal perspective). And this diffusive, propagating effect has three spheres of action. It’s from God to the saints; it’s from the saints to the saints; and it’s from the saints to the sinners (in an evangelistic action). So, unity is not static, but it is in a continuous movement of propagation.

Os Efeitos da Unidade (Parte 3 de 5)

II.

The Effects of Unity (Part 2 of 5)

The psalm 133 presents to us at least 3 effects unity has over our lives and ministries:

I. The Peacemaking Effect (verse 1): “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!”

The first aspect to be considered of this effect is that unity is generated by and in the Holy Spirit in our lives. Why do I say this? First because it is good when brothers live in unity. Goodness is one of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). The word goodness in Greek is “agathosune” and, different of what many think, this word doesn’t mean to act or be good to others, but it means “to do what is right”. To act or be good according to the concept we normally have is related to other fruit of the Spirit: kindness or gentleness (Gr. Chrestostes) which brings the meaning of the aspect of goodness in action, the gentleness to others, or even generosity.

For example, there is a new student (Peter) at the school and he feels totally out of place as the other children won’t play with him. Charles is a Christian kid, and he knows that God doesn’t show favoritism, and it’s not cool what the other kids are doing. So Charles goes and invites Peter to play ball with him. Peter smiling accepts it and there go the two of them. Charles acted with kindness or gentleness to Peter. Now let us say that one day Peter doesn’t do his homework and, worried, asks Charles to allow him to copy his homework. But Charles knows that this is wrong and tells him that he can’t do that. Later, at the school, Peter has to stay in class during recess to finish his homework. So Charles goes to the teacher and asks her if he can help Peter to do his homework. As she allows it, Charles spends the recess helping Peter. In this situation Charles acted with goodness towards Peter. If he had allowed Peter to copy his homework he would have done something wrong, and this would not be “goodness”.

The reason of being for “goodness” is to achieve excellence. In the New Testament there is another Greek word for goodness, “arete”, meaning virtue or excellence (mainly in a more moral aspect). It appears in 2 Peter 1:5 as a foundational associated prerequisite for one to reach the agape love. This means that we do not have the conditions, in terms of moral excellence or virtue, apart of the Holy Spirit.

And in second place, the bible refers to unity as something originated from the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 4:3 “...being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace;…” 1 Corinthians 12:13 “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body…”.

Another aspect of this effect is the reaching point of unity. It is pleasant to whom? Who is pleased by it? The answer can be found in Romans 14:17-19 where we can see that in living a life of pursuit of the things of peace and the building up of one another (meaning unity), in a service act to Christ done in justice, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, we do please God, others and ourselves.

What results does this bring? It generates the end of conflicts. Otherwise, how could we be called brothers? This term, brothers, reminds us of Genesis 13:8, when there was a conflict between Abram’s shepherds and Lot’s shepherds. The answer of Abram was “Please let there be no strife between you and me … for we are brothers” where we see brothers seeking a mediation to keep peace. It isn’t at random that Paul says that we have a ministry of reconciliation. It does not only reach the non-Christians for reconciliation through conversion, but even the Christians for reconciliation through unity. Finally, the phrase “living together” in this verse (Heb. yashab) comes from the context of two people sitting together or dwelling together. This means that unity is not something that happens only once, when we quit in case of failure or someone’s faults, but, on the contrary, it is a continuous process.

I. Efeito Pacificador (verso 1): “Oh!

Ela é agradável a quem?

The Effects of Unity or The Chosen Place to Receive a Blessing (Part 1 of 5)

Unity has been a very used word in the evangelical circles, but very worn out at the same time, because churches, denominations, pastors, leaders, missionaries, etc., that make use of the nomenclature or concept, teach about its immediate benefits once (and only if) you are inside the body of ministration (benefits that do happen, of course), but with little results in truly getting united to the Body of Christ, even considering that only a few of the members of the Body of Christ should actually be part of the Body. As I heard once from an American pastor, from a very well-known around the world denomination, when we asked him to unite with us in an event for the distribution of bibles from door-to-door (S.O.S. Macau project: a bible for each family of Macau) in the former Portuguese territory of Macau, in China, that would end with a special service with representatives of all evangelical denominations in town: “Unhappily, I can’t! How could I go up to the altar together with pastors of so many churches that do not believe like I do. I would be a hypocrite by been there and, besides, this would bring confusion to the members of my church!” This means that unity has find no practical application inside the church. The church has not clothed herself fully in this concept.

This theme is of such importance that we can see a tendency towards this even in the world. What to say about the ecumenism that tries to unite all the religions to a religious life of respect and sharing; or the world globalization; or the common markets; etc.? They are ways that have been manifested to express unity. And this brings up another issue: that in which unity can be used to good as well as to evil. We can see this in the story of Babel tower, when the humanity joined together to reach the heavens, settling in one place only, contrary to the order divine order to multiply and populate the earth: the Cultural Mandate (Genesis 9:1,7). This statement of God warns us to the effects unity may bring: “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.” (Genesis 11:6). For this reason God confused humanity’s language, so that they could spread and populate earth, instead of settle in one place only, in open rebellion against God. So, as we can see, the problem has nothing to do with the tower that was only a monument to show man’s independence of God. It has to do with man’s disobedience to the cultural mandate given by God to populate and rule over the earth. Thus, what we can see here is that when we become one, a huge synergetic power is released that causes us to achieve results that would otherwise be impossible to achieve, a power that can accomplish as much good as evil.

I believe there is no better passage to study about the effects of unity, in an individual and corporative level, than Psalm 133. This psalm, written by David, was probablywritten in the context of when David was anointed king over all of Israel, giving end to a period of division in the kingdom (2 Samuel 5:1-5), what brought a time of peace, sanctification and prosperity to Israel. These benefits remained until the end of the ruling of Salomon, when Israel was divided into two kingdoms (1 Kings 12:16-20): the northern kingdom (Israel) and the southern kingdom (Judah).

Nobel and the Widow

You all may be aware that this year (2010) the Nobel Peace Prize was given to the professor, literary critic and human rights activist Liu Xiaobo. Liu Xiaobo is Chinese and was arrested on June 23rd 2009, and sentenced in December 25th 209 to 11 years of imprisonment due to his participation in the writing of the Charter 08. He was charged as inciting subversion of state power. What is the Charter 08? It’s a document, a manifest, signed by intellectuals and human rights activists from several levels and professions plus 8 thousand other people, that requests political reform and democratization in China. This year Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China”, according to the Norway Nobel Committee.

I believe China will open up for democratization and political reform. It won’t be today or tomorrow, but I think it is already happening. Indeed, it’s deceiving to call China a communist or even socialist country nowadays. You can verify this by walking in the streets of China. There are no signs of communism there. Actually, you can see a wild capitalism taking control of the Chinese’s soul, with no prepare for the changes, with no limits, with no ethics. The Chinese try to copy the model used in the west that “appears” to be working, not noticing there was a whole social, historic, religious, philosophic process to be where we are today and not realizing that at the same time we goods for consumption, money to acquire them, and the progress and technology to process them, we are losing our soul, we are losing our relationships, we are losing the world where we live, and we are dying spiritually. Yes, there was and there is consequences to the way we live our lives in the west.

How could we define China? China today is a nationalist capitalistic nation with glimpses of socialism. It is nationalist because that’s something the government got to instill into the population: the pride of being Chinese, to be proud of China as a nation, to be proud of its history and culture. The Chinese, before, were always trying to flee of China to escape an authoritarian regime, leaving to come back no more. Today they leave China for some years, raise a small fortune and come back again to China, because there is no better place to live than China. So, China will open up, and is already opening, to profound changes in the political and governmental picture. Patience is a virtue in China. The great example of what they don’t want to become, in terms of political and economic opening, is Russia where the socialism ended suddenly and caused the country to break and be controlled by the mafia bosses and big corporations. No, China doesn’t want or need this. The opening will happen and, maybe, this will take 10 years, 20 years. It doesn’t matter. We will get there. But this doesn’t mean that we have to quiet ourselves to the injustices. NO! We have to denounce them as to eradicate them. No only denounce them, but we have also to act with action of solidarity and justice in a movement of love and transformation for the different areas of society.

Jesus, once, together with His disciples and a large crowd that followed Him, was going to a town called Nain. As they got close to the city gates they met a procession coming out of the city: the funeral of a young man. He was the only son of a widow. When Jesus saw the young man’s mother he felt compassion for her, told her not to cry, stopped the procession, and told the dead young man to get up. The young man got up and Jesus gave him back to his mother. The crowd praised God declaring that a great prophet appeared in Israel and that God had come to save His people. This passage is recorded in Luke 7:11-17.

The name Nain means beauty, and Nain was really a very beautiful town surrounded by a greenish valley. Maybe that’s the reason why Jesus was going there, to appreciate the natural beauty of that place, for some holidays, to rest for a while, or, maybe, because He knew He was going to have a divine appointment there. Nain, for someone at that moment, had no beauty whatsoever. It was a place of suffering, of loss, of despair. The mother of that young man was a widow, meaning that her husband has died and now she depended on her son for protection, provision, to keep the family line. But he died too. The Bible records that he was her only son. She was, now, totally helpless. How many of us find ourselves in similar situations? Our life should be vivid and beautiful but we find ourselves surrounded only by a story of pain and abandonment. We can’t see anything beautiful around us.

The funeral procession was leaving through the city’s gates. The gates of the cities in those times were very important places. They represented authority because there were where the elders came to relate their decisions to the people. There where the people came to request decisions concerning their causes. See examples in the story of Ruth and Absalom (Ruth 4:1-12; 2 Sa. 15:1-6). But it was through the gates that the dead young man was coming out. Today many of our young find themselves in that same position. They are losing their authority and they are dying to life. They are taking the wrong decisions and ending by losing the authority that should be theirs. They are giving this authority to drugs, alcohol, pornography, promiscuity, materialism, suicide, etc.

Can you notice what caused Jesus to revive that young man? It was not simply because he was dead (everyone dies eventually). It was not because of the crowd or because of the disciples. It was because of the young man’s mother. What was she doing? She was crying. Jesus felt compassion for her because He identified Himself with her. Just like that young man was her only son, Jesus was also God’s only Son. Just like that young man died, Jesus also had to die (for our sins). Just like that mother was crying, God would be crying and would have His heart broken by the loss of His only Son, killed because of the sins of humanity. The NIV says that Jesus’ heart went out to her. You see? Just like that woman, we need more mothers crying for their children, we need more women crying for other people’s children, we need more people manifesting themselves against death and longing for life. We need intercessors to cry for this generation that is dying and being lost. We need more people to denounce the injustices happening against children, against women, against the youth, against the environment, against the minority groups, against those unable to defend themselves.

When Jesus saw that woman crying He was moved with compassion. He stopped the procession (that was a place of authority and he had the authority), He touches the coffin and He calls the young man. And that young man sat up. We know that that was an open coffin (or stretcher) by the fact that that young man sat up. Many people, when they look to their own lives, think there is no hope. Just like a closed casket, they think there is no way to change their life story. But our lives, it doesn’t matter how dead you may feel it is, are like an open casket. This is not the end. It doesn’t have to be the end. It only takes a touch of Jesus and a Word from Him and we can get up and experience a novelty of life flowing through our being.

From the moment we experience the power of life of Jesus we have to sit up. We have to sit up with Him in the spiritual realms (Eph. 2:6); we have to sit at the places of influence; we have to sit at the places of decision; we have to sit at the feet of Jesus (Lk. 8:35; 10:39,42). Jesus knows where we came from, but He is more concerned about where we are going.

Besides sitting up, that young man started to speak. We don’t know what he spoke, but the fact is that he was dead and now he is speaking. This is what this generation needs today. From the moment they receive a touch from Jesus and listen and obey to His words this generation needs to speak up, expose their ideas, and express their convictions and their testimony. Now is not the hour to be quiet, it is the moment to speak, it’s the moment to share their testimony, it’s the moment to defend the just causes (causes that regard life as the most important).

May we be awarded with spiritual prizes for our non-violent fight for the human rights, for the right to life, for the right to express our convictions for peace and may we be able to identify ourselves with Jesus to the point of calling His attention and may His compassion stop the funeral processions in our lives and around us and generate life and changes in the present state of things. It doesn’t matter if we have a new elected president or not to rule our country.

Nobel e a Viúva

· In our limitation we can’t fulfill God’s will because our vision is limited and partial, but as we seek His presence, our vision gets clearer, and this adds to our walking towards perfection.

· Perfection can’t be reached on our own strength; it has to begin in God and be held by God. God gives the resources for us to achieve this maturity.

· Sin prevents us of reaching out to perfection.

Relevant Observations for Different Levels of Spiritual Maturity - 1 John 2:12-14

After explaining about the life of fellowship with the Father and with Jesus, and about the way to salvation and the fruit such way should show (love), the passage leads us to see who are the people this salvation is addressed to and how this develops in their lives as they grow in faith. The little children (babies in faith), the young men (those with some experience in the faith and an attitude of servant), and the fathers (those with more experience in the faith that, as pastors, leaders, advicers and elders, help other people to grow in faith).

According to verse 12 and 14, what happened to the little children (new believer)?
How are defined the young men (intermediate state of maturity) on verses 13 and 14?
How are described the fathers (spiritually matured) on verses 13 and 14?

Application:
1-When entering the Christian life through salvation, we have by faith to take over our new identity as children of God, and start our relationship of fellowship with God and His Son Jesus.
2-As we grow in fellowship and in our new identity we are strengthened against the devil's schemes (Eph. 6:11), we need to stand firm in Christ in the same way He is in us, taking possession of the authority He gives us to take hold of His victory at the cross over Satan as our own victory (Rev. 12:11)
3-In the maturing of our knowledge of Christ, in a practical way, developing fellowship with Him, we have to share this knowledge to others so that they can also reach out to this fellowship with Him.

Conclusion
Studying this first part of 1 John (1:1 to 2:14) we see that Christian life is a process when Jesus revealed himself so that we could have fellowship with Him, with the Father and with one another. For this to happen we have to walk in the light of a holy living according to the Word. When we sin we can feel safe knowing that Jesus who died in our place, delivering us from God's wrath and making us innocent, wants us to have a practical knowledge of Him and this can only come from a personal experience with Jesus that leads us to practice the commandment to love one another. Little by little we can find what is the level of spiritual maturity we are at.

A New Old Commandment - 1 John 2:7-11

Christian life is a life composed of fellowship with the Father and the Son, and because of that we grow spiritually, perfecting God's love in our lives, so we can live as Jesus lived: reflecting a life of love towards our neighbor.

John talks about an old commandment. Which one? Read Leviticus 19:18.
But he also says it is a new commandment. How?
What does mean "darkness is passing away"?
What are the characteristics of someone who loves his brother, according to verse 10?
What are the characteristics of someone who hates his brother, according to verses 9 and 11?

Application:
1-To seek regeneration through the new birth, so we can try the new life in Jesus;
2-To live a life based on the Word, through the meditation and study of the Bible;
3-To live a practical gospel and not a theoretical one;
4-To possess an attitude of blessing giver instead of blessing seeker.

The Process to Know Jesus - 1 John 2:1-6

The first chapter talks about John's desire for us to have fellowship with the Father and Jesus. As we saw in 1 Jo. 1:5-10, for us to have fellowship with the Father we have to walk in the light as He is in the light. In this passage we are going to see how to have fellowship with Jesus.

Why did John write these things?
What happen if we sin?
How does Christ deal with our sins? Only ours?
Propitiation means that Jesus appeased God's wrath against sin through His sacrifice at the cross turning us to be innocent.
Verse 4 talks about a kind of knowledge of God who doesn't leads to fellowship with God. Why?
According to verses 3,5,6 what do we need to know Jesus?

Application:
1-We'll know Jesus if we study the Word, fill ourselves with the Holy Spirit, practice the Word for our growth, and acquire knowledge that comes from a personal experience with God.

O Processo Para Conhecer a Jesus - 1 João 2:1-6

Walking in the light: the practice of truth - 1 John 1:5-10

John's goal was to testify about the Word of Life who was divine, became human, revealed himself so that we could have fellowship with Him, with the Father and with one another, then our joy would be complete. He came with a message and it's from it that our life of relationship with God is grounded.

What is the message given by Jesus to be announced?
In the message there is a strong contrast (two opposites). What's it?
What do you think about when you read about light and darkness?
What are the false affirmatives about fellowship with God(1 John 1:6,8,10)? What causes them?
What happens if we walk in the light?
If we sin, what do I have to do to deal with sin? What does God do when we confess our sins?

Application:
1-Living in darkness we can't have fellowship with God, so we have to confess our sins to become holy and innocent before God who is light, and keep on practicing the Word of God.

A Testimony That Generates Fellowship - 1 John 1:1-4

We can have a healthy relationship with the brothers and sister in Christ only when we keep a relationship of intimacy with the Father; and one of our life's goals should be to testify about this relationship, thus reaching the divine purpose of fellowship.

What can you learn about Jesus' divinity and humanity from verses 1 and 2?
What is the reason behind the annunciation of the "Word of Life" (verse 3)?
John's testimony was based on what kind of experience? Theory?
The apostles' fellowship was with whom?
The brothers' fellowship was a result of what?

Application:
1-Faith in Christ by who He is and not by what we think He is;
2-To witness about what God has done in our lives;
3-To seek a relationship of fellowship with God and Jesus;
4-To seek a relationship of fellowship with the body of Christ based on our relationship with God and Jesus, and by faith on what Jesus did and has done for us.

1-Fé em Cristo pelo que Ele é e não pelo que achamos que Ele é ;
2-Testemunhar do que Deus tem feito em nossa vida;
3-Buscar um relacionamento de comunhã o com Deus e Jesus;

Hungry Spirits, the Koram and a Chance to Peace

The Chinese celebrate on the 15th day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar the Day of the Hungry Spirits, while the 7th month of the lunar calendar is considered as the month of the hungry spirits. This year the hungry spirits day fell on August 24th. August is normally considered as the month of the hungry spirits (sometimes being extended to September) It’s believed that on the 15th day of the 7th month Heaven, Hell and the world of the living open and connect, thus causing the spirits and ghosts to leave the lower realm, including the dead ancestors to go through the world of the living. As a result, the people, mostly Buddhists and Taoists, execute rites to try to appease the spirits or relieve their suffering. The ancestor worship happens in full, with many people making offerings of food, burning incense, burning of joss paper, and burning papier-mache shaped objects as clothes, gold and other fine objects to appease the ancestors and avoid curses or problems in the family, work, health, etc. It’s a grotesque to see so much food and burnt things on the streets. A real work of witchcraft happening for the whole of the country, with the support and comprehension of the government, even considered as superstition but taken as part of the culture, religion or tradition of the people, after all, it’s better to cover all the bases, isn’t it? Unfortunately, nobody comments on the waste, the rats, cockroaches and other plagues that follow these practices. It’s sad to see so many people slaved by the prison of animism and evil spirits that are behind this celebration to get to be worshipped, due to fear. These practices, indeed, are ways to protect themselves from the evil they believe can attack them if they don’t do them, so that they can’t see that actually they are the ones feeding the evil they try to avoid. I don’t agree with their practices, but I respect their decision, continue to love, pray and serve them, when the opportunity allows me, so that I can show the including, reaching, protecting and saving reality of the Kingdom.

This week we were remembering those that lost their lives at the twin towers of the World Trade Center, on September 11th, due to a terrorist attack. This happened 9 years ago. On September 11th, this year, a friend posted a message at facebook, showing his sympathy to his American friends and to the American population in general, for what has happened and telling how he believes the world would never be the same again. It was a beautiful demonstration of love and empathy for those who suffered and still suffers by the Power of evil. But the comments he got in reply were a show of ignorance and lack of sensitivity. Some were making jokes because he posted 9/11 (as it’s read in English) instead of 11/9, (as it’s read in Brazil) as if this was more important than the meaning of the date. In one of the entries someone commented, not taking in account the pain the date brings, criticizing by saying that the only change in the world after 9/11 was the armed rise of a mourning nation invading other weaker nations due to selfish reasons. Truth be said, one thing do not justify another. Violence doesn’t justify more violence. But the reminder of the loss of human lives is not the proper place to make soulless political statements. It’s the moment to bring consolation and prayer and the proclamation of peace. This only shows what is inside humanity’s heart, even the Christians: a stuck, deep-rooted violence. What have we seen following the 9/11? A world anti-Islam feeling. Even among the Christians, men and women, there was a change in their perspective as they started to see all Muslims with suspicion, as the enemies and deserving to suffer the same violence they had caused, not considering that they didn’t caused (The movie “The Siege”, from 1998, becomes a prophetic moment). Hungry spirits dwelling people’s hearts.

The we have the Reverend Terry Jones, pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center, Who offers this amazing act of Grace and Love: to burn copies of the Koram in, what he describes, as “not an act of hate or love” in spite of him admitting “we will no longer be controlled and dominated by their fears and threats”, in what can be understood that from now on the threats come from him or the Americans Who are still suffering from what happened on 9/11. It’s a good demonstration of what doesn’t mean to be a Christian (at least no the biblical Christianity taught by Jesus). For sure all the Muslims got his point of view: an yey for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, value that they already live for. But what about the message of grace and peace and reconciliation that is the message of Jesus? Where is it? I don’t think they got to see that one. The hurt pride of pastor Jones was very clear, but the humility in extending forgiveness, this is still to be seen. Hungry spirits.

I was in Philippines at the beginning of this year in a evangelistic/social trip. From the many places where I’ve preached nowhere was I more touched than at Santa Cruz, a cemetery at the middle of the city of Manila, with around 300,000 people living on top of graves. I walked around there, looking at those people walking and living around the graves (some of the graves were piled up on top of others turning the cemetery in true corridors of death). We preached and distributed clothes there as people would receive Christ, but during the whole time I was there I kept reminding myself of the Gerasene Demon-possessed man. I always asked myself how someone could live in a cemetery. Only if one is infested with demons, isn’t it? But there I could see people who were living there for social, political, economic reasons. And in the same way as the demons inside the Gerasene man were hungry for his soul, and later hungry to go to the pigs, these people were hungry for a little of hope, social justice and a taste of the Kingdom of God in their lives “today”. But the hungry spirits have kept them bound to poverty, general indifference and rejection. Hungry spirits.

The answer to violence is no-violence. The answer is freedom. The answer is justice. The answer is peace. Matthew 5:3 says “blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:6 says “blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” The poor in spirit is the one who lost everything, even the vigor in his/her spirit is vanishing. These are those hungry for a manifestation of social justice. Theirs is the kingdom. Not a kingdom that will one day come, but a kingdom that is already here. We have the responsibility to proclaim this kingdom due to our role as peacemakers (Matthew 5:9) and because we are part of the Kingdom of the Prince of Peace who is not burning Korams, or allowing people to live in cemeteries, or disregarding someone else’s pain and suffering. On the contrary, it is a kingdom that leaves the insides of the church and helps to rebuild houses destroyed by tornados, earthquakes, landslides. It’s a kingdom who gives the opportunity for those who cannot support their families, who visits the sick and gives strength to those in despair. This is the true fasting (Isaiah 58). This is the role of the true Servant of God, guided by the Spirit of God (Isaiah 61). He/she rebuilds the ruins and restores the devastated places and the ruined cities (Isaiah 61:4). May we be hungry for the Holy Spirit (Isaiah 61; Joel 2:28) instead of allowing the hungry spirits in our souls to be expressed through acts of violence, prejudice, rejection, ethnic pride, denominational pride, religious pride, superiority and intolerance. Let’s give a chance to peace to be expressed through our lives.

Espíritos Famintos, o Alcorão e Uma Chance Para a Paz

Isto aconteceu a 9 anos atrás.

A resposta é liberdade. A resposta é justiça. A resposta é paz.

A Tour Bus, a Sewer’s Manhole Cover, Wounds and Unbelief

This last week everybody in Macau, Hong Kong and China got to follow the 12-hour hijacking of a tour-bus in Philippines when a former policeman kept 25 people from Hong Kong as hostages, releasing 9 of them later during the afternoon (children, old and sick people), but ending by murdering 10 of the remaining hostages. It seems now that all the killing was done by the hijacker. There were suspicions that the police force could have participated in the death of the tourists by the anti-professional and amateurish way they handled the case. The Hong Kong TV showed several live moments of the hijacking and following siege of the bus by the Police up to the blood conclusion, the murder of the hijacker and the rescue of the few hostages and dead bodies.

What seemed as a closed chapter of one more sad story is still having repercussions. This crisis has generated a very strong anti-Filipino mood in Macau and Hong Kong. It’s the critical eyes, evil comments, swearing and even in some radio broadcastings is possible to hear some radio hosts cursing the Filipino population as if the tragedy caused by an unbalanced man and a disorganized Police force was the fault of the whole Filipino population. In the following day one of the teenagers that come to our meetings here in Macau said that she went to a square with her young sister and while there one of the security men asked her if she was a Filipina. She said she was. After a while, she tried to buy something in the market at the square but the security man came to her and told her she was not allowed to buy anything there. In her words: embarrassing. And this is happening in an international community like Macau and Hong Kong. According to a friend, this will be going on for a couple of weeks, and until then the Filipinos will have to be patient and bear the pressure.

But this is a wound that will be painful for a while in the Chinese community. A family of 5 lost 3 people in this tragedy, remaining only the mother and the son who was shot in the head and is treated at the hospital in a critical situation. It’s hard not to empathize and cry together and we watch the weeping of the families. If you are like me, at the moment when these things are happening you should be praying asking for God’s intervention.

Last week a Brazilian missionary family was going to Hong Kong on vacation after a few years without taking a break. While they were walking the mother who was carrying her 6 month baby, passed in front of a construction site and suddenly, as she stepped on a sewer’s manhole cover, the cover under her broke down and she fell in a hole 2 meters deep. Her first reaction was to protect the baby, what she did well, but the fall caused her to break her leg in two places, around the knee area. The baby got some scratches on her face, but that’s was all. The construction company responsible for the construction site, including that manhole cover, went to the hospital to take a basket of fruits. Will this pay the hospital bill? This week we cut our vacation short to help the couple by taking care of their children. The mother is at the hospital still and, as her leg is all swollen, she doesn’t know when she will go under surgery or be discharged from the hospital. It’s a wound that will be painful for a while too.

I saw the circumstances in Pakistan as well. They are really suffering with the flooding there. No water, no food, and the international aid diminishing as nobody want to help a country that may be hosting or helping terrorists. I have prayed a lot for this people, and it’s impossible not to feel their pain and wish to be there to help someway. It’s hard to watch someone asking for water and receiving a stone of rejection or a snake of revenge in return. This is going to be a wound that will take longer time to be healed.

This week I want to talk about Shammah who got a wound that took a long time to be healed. What to do when we are hurt? How to work in the daily circumstances that leave a Mark in our souls?

2 Samuel 23:11,12

Shammah was the son of Agee. The name Agee means “I shall increase”. Agee must have had many plans and expectations. His goal was to succeed, no matter what. His name was a mission statement. But it seems that his plans failed, and all that he got to know was defeat, the frustration, the pain of putting effort and not see the expected results, the loss of all the investment as it vanishes just like water in dry land. Sometimes we have our own plans and we hope to succeed in our efforts, even to the point of taking God out of the picture. We think we can everything by ourselves, in our own strength and skills. For sure, we need to work in excellence, but God has to be part of the process. Otherwise the result will be frustration, depression, suffering, pain, loss. It seems that Shammah was born amidst this chaos and maybe that’s what was in Agee’s mind as he named his son.

The name Shammah means “loss”, “despair”, “astonishment”. Maybe this was the only thing Shammah learned and lived through his whole life. Imagine yourself growing and listening your name associated to pain, suffering, loss, depression. Imagine: “Hey, “loss” (or could be loser) come here”. “Depression”, where are you? “Hey, “pain”, I need you.” Can you imagine a child growing listening to these words?

But there came a day when He changed his story. There came a day when Shammah said “Enough!” Enough of all this pain! Enough of be known as loss and defeat and frustration. The Israeli army was in a lentil field, probably harvesting or protecting it. And there came the Philistines. What happened? The whole troop but Shammah fled from them. He must have remembered of the victories God gave His people, Israel. He must have thought of the victories conquered by David and the other might men who fought along him. He must have considered that God doesn’t change, but on the contrary it was He who needed to change his way of thinking and looking at himself and, more than anything else, his identity. Shammah stood his ground in the middle of the field. He defended it and struck down the enemy. The fields are ripe for the harvest today, but the enemy has tried to scare away the church so that they won’t go harvest the souls. We need, following the example of Shammah, take a stand and defend the field, even if it means that we will be alone.

What we learn here?

1- Our past may or may not direct our present and future. Our attitude will.
It’s not what happened to you that will direct your life, but what you do with that that has happened to you. What is your attitude when bad things happen? What’s your reaction? To fall in self-pity? Or in self complacency? To complain? To be passive? To feed bitterness? To lack in forgiveness? You can allow yourself to be influenced by the things of the past, or you can stand your ground and let God change your story. It’s easy to say that all the evil of the world is the Filipino people’s fault, or the Chinese people, or the North Korean, or the American people, or the Arab people, or the Muslim people. It’s so hard to see our own deficiencies in our attitudes of pride, bitterness, superiority and prejudice. Yes, people are kidnapped, people are killed, people doing good thing fall in sewer manholes, but this doesn’t mean that God is not in the control. And this doesn’t mean that God can change us and teach us in all circumstances. But it means that we will harvest the blessings if we dispose ourselves to go towards these blessings.

2- Many times we will be defending the truth by ourselves.
For many people truth is relative. It depends of the benefit it brings to them. Many people say that everyone has their own truth. Several times we will find ourselves defending the truths of the Bible alone by ourselves, totally abandoned may it be by fear, by the weight of the responsibility truth brings along, by the consequences, etc. Several times we will have people targeting our heads, ideas and positions with their weapons of criticism and verbal violence. But we have to root ourselves in the truth, because it’s the truth that set us free and brings healing to the wounds (John 8:32; 14:6; 8:36). Only the truth can give us a whole vision of life, because if the truth is relative, according to everyone’s vision, people who hijack buses and planes will be excused to do it, abortion will be justifiable, homosexualism will still be an viable option, drugs will keeping on have room among the young, domestic violence will go on being tolerated, pedophilia will find followers, because truth is limited to self-benefit, and ethic and moral will continue to be unrecognized.

3- The enemy doesn’t want us to benefit of the blessings of the Gospel.
We have to keep this in mind: God have already prepared unending blessings for us, but the enemy has been deceiving us trough lies, manipulation, oppression, deceit, giving us a mindset of conformism, passivity, of victims, saying that the situations we go through won’t change and God is unable to change those circumstances. If we won’t stand in the divine promises of the Word of God and spend time of fellowship and intimacy with God we will accept the enemy’s lies and we will become blind in our understanding of who we are in God and what is our destiny Just because o four unbelief that blocks the light of the Gospel of Christ to shine in our minds (2 Corinthians 4:4). We can’t accept to be called losers, frustrated, defeated, depressed, but we have to enjoy the blessings Christ bought for us at the cross.

4- God has called us to harvest the fields with the message of the Gospel.
John 4:35 says that the fields are ripe to the harvest. Jesus prayer was that God would send more workers to the fields, to harvest it. Mark 16:15 brings this reality where we are called to go to the field (world) taking the Gospel to all the living creatures. In Matthew 28:18-20 Jesus gives us the authority to make disciples (not believers or church members), teaching them the realities of the Kingdom (which is not limited to the church only), baptizing them to enter in this new reality and be assured of the cooperation, of the synergy with God who is always with us, after all we are His fellow-workers (1 Corinthians 3:9; 3 John 8). Do you know what is beautiful about that? It’s that many times when we are hurt, God will bring people who are hurt much more than we are so that we can become agents of healing to them, while He is healing us through this process without our noticing. When we serve we communicate healing and we are healed at the same time.

5- God has got a new name for us. A new identity.
Shammah suffered for a long time by being known as pain or loss or be reminded of the story of defeat suffered by his father and his family. But soon came a moment when he decided to be known by the name God had for him, assuming the new identity of the Kingdom. God has a new name and a new identity for each one of us. He changed Abram, Sarai, Jacob’s name to names that would express His purpose and His character. He wants to express His love, His character, His blessings and His plans in our lives. This new identity is found only in Jesus. For now to be a Filipino is not so good. In some countries to be Brazilian is not much of advantage. To be American is a death sentence in some Muslim countries. But we all can be citizens of Heaven, where nobody can prevent us of enter in but ourselves. Accept the new identity from Heaven to your life.

And in the end we read that the Lord again brought about a great victory. Shammah may have fought the battle, but God gave the victory. We may fight with all our strength but ultimately the victory will be brought about by the Lord. After all we are His fellow-workers and He is ours.
