Week 3 – Devotional 3 - Jesus is Baptized – Baptism with the Holy Spirit and Baptism of Fire

19/03/2014 – Wednesday Read Matthew 3:10-12; Mark 1:7,8; Luke 3:15-18; John 1:26-28

1- “...but after me will come one...” John was referring to whom? John was baptizing with water. The one coming after him would baptize how? What does mean to be baptized with the Holy Spirit (see Acts 1:8; 2:1-4)? Have you been baptized with the Holy Spirit?

2- There is a contrast between the tree that produces good fruit and the one that does not produce good fruit, between the wheat and the chaff. What is going to happen to the tree that does not produce good fruit and to the chaff? What does represent the lack of fruit and the chaff in our lives? What does mean to be baptized with fire (see 1 Corinthians 3:12-15)? Are you been baptized with fire?

3- Luke 1:17 says that John would go in the spirit and power of Elijah, but here John declares that the One coming after him is more powerful than he is. What does that say to us about Jesus’ power? Power to do what? What does John’s statement show us about his attitude?

4- In Matthew 11:11 Jesus says that “among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist”, but here John the Baptist says he is not worthy to untie and carry Jesus’ sandals, task that was only done by the lowest of the servants in a house. What does that tell us about John’s attitude? What does that tell us about our own attitudes toward Jesus?
